I used to run my own ironing service, much larger than I could manage I had to wind it down a little, however I still iron for my favourite customers so I need a decent iron! I've always been a fan of the little known Polti range, and favour the professional quality and ease with which you can iron with the Poltis. Yes you pay more, but this is true of most things in life!
This particular Polti is (I think), the 3rd that I have owned, and each time I buy a new one I always try a different one from the range rather than repurchase the same product. This particular Polti has been my favourite so far.
With a streamlined black and silver design, it looks the part, but it also looks different. I don't want to spend the best part of £200 on an iron and it looks the same as every other one on the market. Ergonomically this is bang on, there isn't anything worse than ironing for hours on end and getting sore, dry hands as a consequence of bad design. The easy to hold handle fits neatly in the palm of the hand and is comfortable to hold, while being of a weight that isn't going to hurt your wrists after a short amount of time ironing (like some other well-known branded, expensive irons have done in the past).
Reservoir and steam
The steam generator iron has a large reservoir of 1.1 litres which is an excellent capacity. You can constantly use steam if required, without the worry of having to fill up the tank every ten minutes. A 1.1 litre tank will give you well over 80 or 90 minutes use without the need to fill up (this particular model has been designed to reduce consumption, and so the boiler really does work efficiently.). Because of the professional finish I'm expected to iron, I do use quite a lot of steam (except on delicate garments) and so this is an important factor for me when considering an iron. The 150g/min steam output is excellent, with an average iron having around 80g/min. The higher this is, the more professional the job will become, but also you will find that you are able to iron heavy items such as curtains or even the sofa covers. I can't remember the last time that I had my sofa professionally cleaned, I just use the delicate wash on my washing machine to avoid shrinkage and then iron with this and it looks like I've had someone round to clean it, but it's not cost me a penny. The same can be said of dry clean only items, the majority of the time, it's only dry clean because of the ironing side, if you can wash safely on a cool wash, you can make light work of the creases afterwards. I used to spend a fortune at the dry cleaners until I opened my ironing service and realised what a waste of money it was (providing you understand the settings on your washing machine)! The adjustable steam settings which make it perfect for ironing different garments, and the LED indicator shows when the steam has reached the temperature ready for you to use.
A lot of people when purchasing their iron do not realise how important the soleplate is, and finding one made with the right surface is a must. The Vaporella is made with a ceramic soleplate, which is a scratch free surface ultimately meaning that it will glide over the garment with much more ease making the job much easier for you. This ironing surface will require little maintenance and only an infrequent wipe over. A standard iron will usually be made with an aluminium soleplate which will scratch over time, meaning the job of ironing becomes harder for you and eventually will need replacing altogether.
Auto - shut off
A nice little safety feature which makes me happier all round. The auto shut off works after 15 minutes, meaning if you forget to turn it off for whatever reason, you are protected all round. You aren't wasting energy (or money) and you don't have to worry that people will get burnt, or your house will burn down!! I always thought safety features like this were a waste of time, people don't actually forget to turn them off do they?! Erm, yes I do! I once got caught out when my little girl screamed upstairs whilst I was ironing and I immediately ran upstairs. I can't remember what the drama was, but I know it resulted in me reading her a story and doing a jigsaw with her upstairs, all the while my iron was on! When I went back down and realised what I had done (probably after around 30 minutes!!), the iron was completely cool to the touch.
The automatic winder is a nice little finishing touch, especially when you are tired after completing the ironing, you just want the board and the iron to disappear, so the automatic winder tidies itself neatly away with little effort. This makes storage that little bit more bearable after you have sacrificed valuable storage space by purchasing this large steam generator. The solid carry handle is also fantastic and I haven't ever come across this before as a feature on an iron. As a benefit to people with mobility issues in their arms / hands, this makes the Polti a strong contender as the actual iron is lighter than a regular iron, making it a much easier process requiring little exertion.
Steam generator or regular iron?
I have to say that I wouldn't ever go back to a regular iron again. Steam generators are basically a professional item brought to the home setting, and as such are much more powerful than a regular iron. They can be used as a normal iron, but can also be used on dry clean only items due to the vertical steam, meaning the iron doesn't even need to touch the garment. The reservoir and heating element work together to provide only the most powerful amount of steam, but as this is adjustable they are so versatile to each garment. Although the outlay is usually more than a regular iron would be, the cost reduction is instant for those people who regularly send garments to be dry cleaned, which will obviously drastically reduce costs.
Priced at £199, the Polti is an expensive option, but if you have the budget, one that I would absolutely recommend. You will not be disappointed.
