We used to have a Philips steam generator iron that I loved but it broke so we were on the lookout for something to replace it. I was adamant I wanted another steam generator as they make ironing so much easier. We saw this one on offer in our local Makro and as it was a good price we decided to buy it.
The appliance is quite bulky but no more so than similar products. The iron is attached to the base by a cord that is plenty long enough for reaching the ends of the ironing board. A cable runs from the base to plug it into a socket and again there is plenty of cord to reach. There is a range of steam settings and heat settings to choose from depending on the type of material you are ironing. The iron handle has a conveniently placed trigger on it that you press to generate steam.
- The water tank holds lots so you can use loads of steam without having to fill it up often
- Because of the steam, the iron makes decreasing clothes quick and easy, even if you're rubbish at ironing (as I am)
- The iron glides across clothes easily while not feeling too light
- It takes around two minutes to heat up, which I think is quite a while, especially if I'm only doing one item
- Windows steam up if you're using the iron for any length of time
This iron isn't the cheapest available but I have to say that it really is rather good.
It has a large water reservoir, which means that it can produce a lot of steam, which really does help with ironing - no more having to refill the iron with water halfway through! The steam has three heat settings, and there are four for the actual iron. I find that both the iron and the steam are plenty hot enough, and I've found that ironing shirts etc is much faster, as you don't have to iron them on both sides due to the heat that this iron produces.
The iron also has an extra long cable, which is useful as it stops people tripping up on overly short ones, as well as meaning that you can iron a little way away from a TV socket.
Overall, this really is a very good iron. It's quite expensive, but you get what you pay for and if you want the best of the best, you just have to buy this iron.
These irons are truly amazing! As sad as I feel writing a review for an iron. This one really does deserve it. It is so much easier to use because once you've filled up the base, you can steam away for ages. I tend to save my ironing up for a treat at special occasions (like when there really is nothing on the TV - not even Dave!!) and I can do 12 men's shirts in one go. Also, I only have to iron one side of the sleeve because the steam is so powerful, it irons all the way through to the other side. I've never had a problem, I've never bothered cleaning it. It just works, every time with no fuss or mess. I used to hate ironing and although I wouldn't say it's my favourite pastime, with this iron it doesn't feel quite such a chore. Oh who am I kidding? I love it!!!
There are three levels of heat for the steam and there are four main heat settings for the iron heat itself, but you can use the clicking mechanism when setting the iron heat to use heat settings between the main ones. This gives a lot of choice over your ironing temperature. The wire is really long to plus into the wall and the cord from the iron to the base is also plenty long enough to navigate even the largest ironing board.
An expensive but excellent piece of kit!
