Tesco IR08 Steam Iron
Advantages: very cheap, works well with thin fabrics
Disadvantages: not powerful enough
A great Steam Iron for students - cheap and does its job without problems.
The Tesco Value IR08 Steam Iron
Student Houses are usually great, nice rooms, big kitchens and lovely housemates - the only let down in our house were the kitchen appliances. Within the first month our microwave, our kettle and our toaster broke. Being students we could not really afford high end products and once again our way led us to Tesco. Every big Tesco store has a electronic area with a varied choice of low cost household appliances from sandwich makers to hairdryers.
As with many storeīs own brands Value products are cheap but usually hit and miss - some products are amazing value for money while others are a complete let down. As shameful as it is but while being on our shopping trip we realised that we lived for several months without even owning a steam iron. When I had to iron my shirts for work I usually went to my boyfriendīs and ironed them there. The Tesco Value IR08 Steam Iron ended this - we finally bought our first iron for the amazing price of 3.84 pounds!
---- Price, Availability and Packing ----
The IR08 Steam Iron is available at any big Tesco store in the electric area. With under 4 pounds it is even cheaper than most other own brand products like the toaster and the hair dryer. It is rather small and with only 1300 watt not very powerful. We actually debated quite a bit if we should invest in one with a bit more power but if you - like us - donīt do much ironing it is not really worth it. Being students we can be rather lazy; I donīt really wear stuff that needs ironing and never bother with ironing bed linen and duvets. Guess it will be a long time before Iīm going to be a good housewife :-)
The Steam Iron comes in the plain standard Tesco Value box, is wrapped in plastic and has an extra protection foil over the stainless steel plate. A small instruction booklet is included in the pack. Iīm used to 2 year guarantee but the iron only had one for one year. Now Iīm not sure if this is an English thing or only with this product. Make sure that you keep your till receipt as the guarantee declaration is printed on it. We lost ours of course within minutes of opening the box but so for we didnīt need it.
The design is horrible; I know that I cannot expect much for under 4 pounds but even I have to complain about the choice of colours. The pink is absolutely horrendous and makes the iron stick out like a sore thumb in our storage area. Iīve seen here on Dooyoo that there was one a blue variation which looks much better. The power cord is of a more than sufficient length and never caused any problems.
The iron has more functions than we expected. Using a dial one can choose between 4 heat settings from low to very high. Very high here means actually very high and you should choose your setting with care. Setting 2 or maybe sometimes 3 is enough for my shirts and I never had to used the highest option. Steam is produced quickly and in sufficient amounts to help with all thin, creased fabrics. There is also a water squirt function which I never had to use as the materials I iron are usually quite thin. However, I tried it once and it works without problem.
We never had any problems with the Tesco Value Steam Iron and it still works fine after a few months of usage.
---- Using the Steam Iron ----
Since I was an AuPair in Italy and had to do the household for a six people family I hate ironing! I would never even dream about ironing my everyday stuff or my towels but I have to look smart for work and therefore cannot avoid ironing my shirts.
My new iron never had any problems with these rather thin materials and even though it is not very powerful it never takes long until all my shirts are clean and free of creases. I was positively surprised by how hot the iron got and how quickly everything worked. The only negative thing here is that the top of the plate is not as pointy as I would like it to be. This can be quite annoying when ironing collars.
The other thing that I donīt like about this iron is the small tank, with only 0.15ml it is not even big enough to go through a few shirts when using the steam option regularly. Refilling the tank however is easy with the little jug that comes included in the pack. Speaking about the steam option, well, there is not much to say. It works well enough but again, it seems as if the iron was designed for thin fabrics as there is nowhere near enough steam produced to iron a thick cotton bed sheet.
---- Would I buy the TESCO Value IR08 Steam Iron again? ----
This has to be without doubt and question a clear YES! Everyone in my flat share is absolutely convinced that we made a really great bargain here and we could not live without our Tesco Value Steam Iron. As I said before we do not iron a lot apart from the occasional shirt or skirt and the iron is more than sufficient for these thin fabrics. I cannot recommend it to you if you have a lot of ironing to do/like to iron you bed linen. It is not powerful enough for thick materials and iron a whole bed sheet seems like a nightmare.
All in all it is a great product for students but not for a big family.
For me it is 09 out of 10 stars, I cannot recommend this product highly enough and will definitely buy it again if it does every need replacing. However, if I ever settle down and have a family I will need a proper steam iron.
