Shortly after Christmas I decided to treat myself to a pair of 9 carat gold hooped earrings for pierced ears as whilst I've owned quite a few pairs during my lifetime, due to their style they had soon become misshapen and unsightly to wear. With an approximate budget of £60 I headed for H Samuel in Cardiff and felt somewhat overwhelmed at the huge choice available to me. An assistant was by my side within minutes offering to remove from the glass cabinet those that caught my eye and after pondering for a good while, I eventually decided upon a pair of 9 carat Gold Two Colour Diamond Cut Double Creole Earrings and this review discusses my thoughts.
I had never previously owned a pair of creoles as I wasn't keen on the idea of a hinge and a clip, as I suspected they would break after a short period of time. However, it was the eye-catching sparkling design of the diamond cut earrings that really appealed to me although initially I was disappointed that they were of a creole design, as I would have preferred a dainty butterfly clip. The assistant removed them from the display cabinet and demonstrated how easy they were to open and close and on closer examination and trying them out for myself, I felt confident that both the hinge and the receiver section, which is basically a small U shape, were sturdy and unlikely to break.
The 9 carat gold earrings are 1.5 centimetres in diameter and each consist of two fairly wide hoops; one of which offers a smooth surface whilst the other has been expertly diamond cut to display literally dozens of indentations, which offer a sparkling appearance to create the illusion that the earrings have been intertwined with an array of tiny pieces of the precious stone. The authenticity marking of the gold can be found engraved along the hinged section of the clips on each of the earrings. Despite my initial reservations about owning a pair of creole style earrings, I find the hinged section easy to open where it is extremely robust and I gently push the slightly pointed end into my ear piercing, then push down on the hinged area until I hear it clip into place. On the first few occasions that I wore these earrings I was worried they would open and fall from my ears and I continuously had to feel that they were still there, particularly as they are so light to wear.
I've owned the earrings for eight months and tend to wear them a few times each week and the only issue I've experienced is that one of the U shaped receivers had slightly opened and as a result, the hinged section wasn't quite secure enough. However, my husband used a small pair of pliers to tighten it for me although I panicked that the delicate gold would snap especially as he can be a little heavy handed at times! I clean my earrings every so often with a special gold cleaner, as whilst they don't appear dirty in any way, I want to make sure they're free of bacteria and ensure that I preserve the wonderful sparkling effect.
I paid £79.99 for my earrings in December, but the H Samuel website is now listing them at £69.99. The earrings have a 12 month guarantee and on reflect, I should probably have returned them to the store when I experienced the issue with the clip, but in all honesty, I couldn't be bothered to travel the 30 mile round trip to Cardiff just for a minor repair. I am very pleased with my purchase despite their high price, as I adore the way they catch the light where they offer a beautiful sparkle and of course, gold is currently a good investment (well, that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!)
I hope you found my review useful and thanks for reading.
