Ortak Charles Rennie Mackintosh E1024 Earrings
Advantages: Elegant design tactile to the touch timeless design
Disadvantages: Initial outlay
I have been a huge fan of Ortax jewellery ever since my 21st Birthday when I received a stylish silver bangle from my aunt and uncle for my birthday. 18 years later I still have this piece and still wear it today showing the classic appeal of some of their designs and these earrings are not exception.
As the name probably tells you this firm is based in the Orkney Islands and you can see how the islands heritage of ancient Norse and Scottish history influences a lot of the designs. The founder, Malcolm Gray based himself in the islands and the manufacture of Ortax jewellery is still on the islands today nearly 30 years after the company first started.
What these earrings look like and what I think about the design
The pair that I have is in silver but there are also available in gold. I personally prefer the Celtic style jewelry and the Rennie Mackintosh pieces I have in silver as think this makes them look for some reason to me more authentically Celtic this is just my opinion and I am really not sure what I base this on.
These earrings are for pierced ears and are a drop style. The length of these is 36mm from the top of the earring and at their widest point are 10mm. Ortax base the design of these earrings on the work of architect, designer, and artist Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868 - 1928). It is fitting that a Scottish design and jewelry firm do this as he was one of the most creative designers in Scotland's design history. He was notably famous for his blend of traditional designs. The earrings are based on one of his most noticeable and recognizable images of a curved flower with leaves and this design is often seen on some of the Rennie Mackintosh furniture in museums.
The design of the earrings is very art nouveau in look I think with curved sweeping lines that are quite tactile to the touch. The earrings are very three dimensional and are not flat at all but have raised edges and curves in the design. This all helps to give them a very elegant look that scream quality to me as the designer has spent time thinking about how they look when they hang and they are just as appealing from all sides I think. I also rather like the way that they move as I walk as they seem to gently sway like a real flower would in the wind and because they are on a stud fastening rather than a hoop if they are moving you are not worried about them falling out.
When I wear them
As the earrings are an elegant and understated design I find that I can wear these on many occasions such as work, lunches out with friends or going shopping even. The design of them lends it self well to both formal and casual wear as they can be very simple. I find that even if I am wearing a pair of jeans and a t shirt that they can help lift an outfit especially when co ordinate with other items in my collection. At work they are not to ostentatious so that people would be distracted by them but give a professional edge to a causal work look of trousers and a shirt or skirt and top. The only occasion that they are perhaps not suited to would be formal dances where you want some thing with a bit more bling and sparkle really to wow people. A friend of mine has worn these earrings as a Scottish bride as a reference to her Scottish heritage on her day and they did look wonderful against her red hair and the cream of her gown.
How to keep them clean
As with all silver over time they can start to loose a bit of their shine so I tend to clean them with silver polish. It is a bit tricky to get all of the earrings nice and clean with the curved design but using a cotton bud with the silver polish seems to work quite well I find at both applying the cleaner to them and to remove it.
I have had these earrings now for over 8 years during this time I have never had any problems with the fastening becoming loose or the drop part of the earring becoming detached from the stud so I can honestly say they are very well made and well crafted and I can't see any problems with how well they will continue to be problem free.
Overall and recommendation
I would definitely recommend these earrings they are very classic in their look and hence I think are never going to go out of style. The elegant lines and movement with thin the design of the earrings makes them move with great beauty and grace and adds a lovely touch to outfits be it for work or days out. They can help lift an outfit with their graceful design. At Silver £65 or £365 for 9 carat yellow gold these are not a throw away piece of jewellery but one that will stand the test of time in your wardrobe for many years. I have had mine for over 8 years now and they still look as good as the day I got them as a gift and I have no plans to get rid of them any time soon as I can still see me wearing these for many years to come.
