Advantages: Can be personalised with my own choice of beautiful charms
Disadvantages: My few niggles with adding charms outside of the clips
During the summer of last year whilst flicking through one of those women's glossy magazines my eyes were captured by a double page advertisement for Pandora. As I had not previously heard of the brand I was drawn into the pages, which displayed beautiful images of bracelets adorned with sparkling charms and beads. Unfortunately, none of the glamorous images quoted prices and my initial thoughts were that the brand was unaffordable. However, a couple of months later I came across the brand on the internet and was pleasantly surprised at the prices, which were far lower than I had initially anticipated.
I made a decision to purchase a bracelet, but had absolutely no idea which one to go for as I did not find the internet a particularly useful resource. If you are familiar with Pandora you will be aware that there are dozens of bracelets from which to choose. However, I was unable to ascertain the purpose of the different designs and which particular style would meet my requirements. Consequently, I decided to visit a Pandora store and spent some time with an assistant where my questions were answered and my purchase was made with this review discussing my bracelet and my buying experience. I will begin my review by providing the information that I would like to have known when I first considered making a purchase.
~~ My Requirements ~~
In addition to not being aware of the purpose of each style of bracelet my intentions were to purchase approximately half a dozen charms over a period of time. However, making a purchase online without initially visiting a Pandora store would have proved difficult as I had no idea of the size of bracelet I would require. I needed to ensure that there was sufficient space between the bracelet and my wrist for my future charm purchases. Consequently, I was afraid that I would make a purchase of a bracelet that would perfectly fit when I had a few charms, but would be tight when I added any more.
~~ Visiting a Pandora store and making my purchase ~~
I gave my requirements to the assistant and she suggested I purchased one of their My First Bracelets, which is identical to the sterling silver Starter Bracelet as shown above. Whilst the Starter Bracelet has a large and extremely eye-catching shiny silver clasp displaying the Pandora logo, My First Bracelet also displays two beautifully etched removable silver clips and a Murano glass bead, which work out more cost effective than individually purchasing each of the items.
I tried two sizes of bracelet on my 16 cm wrist with the assistant suggesting the most suitable to be the 20 cm length, particularly as my intentions were to add additional charms. I would advise that the bracelets are available in sizes from 16 cm - 23 cm. The bracelet sat comfortably on my wrist and I was able to push two fingers between the bracelet and my skin, which is the 3 cm space that Pandora recommends for adding more charms.
Whilst the assistant placed the bracelet onto my wrist she suggested I practice with trying to remove and replace it myself. Unfortunately, this is where I struggled and I am fortunate that I have long finger nails as it was necessary to push the tip of my thumb nail into the grooved area within the clasp that will release when applying a little pressure. I was advised that the best way of opening and closing the bracelet is to place my wrist on a flat surface. The end of the bracelet is similar to that of a nail tack where the pointed area is placed into the corresponding groove on the other side of the clasp and then firmly pressed until it clicks tightly into the closed position. Whilst I have now mastered the process I would advise that those with mobility problems in their hands and fingers would struggle, so they would need assistance. I also believe that those with extremely short finger nails would find the process somewhat difficult.
There were a few choices of My First Bracelet; all of which displayed different coloured Murano charm and clips, but unfortunately, I was not able to mix and match. Consequently, I opted for the bracelet that offered a purple coloured Murano glass bead with pale blue flowers. I love the design of the bracelet as it is an eye-catching rope style with tiny etchings running around its width. I would point out that all genuine Murano beads display the word "Pandora" twice on the one side and "925 ALE" on the other as sadly, there are a lot of fakes available on the internet.
~~ Wearing my bracelet and adding additional charms ~~
Within hours of arriving home I was searching through all of the delightful charms and beads on the official Pandora website. As a result, I made a few purchases, which have now taken my total charms to eight, but this is when I encountered a few niggles with my bracelet. The bracelet consists of two raised areas as shown in the image above, which is where the clips are fitted and these open and close in the identical manner to the clasp. Each of the charms easily fit onto the bracelet where they need to be turned approximately a dozen times over the small grooved areas that display tiny threads. Whilst the bracelet displays a section of threads on both sides of the clasp the charms can only be added to the one side and subsequently, need to be pushed around the bracelet and threaded over the relevant sections.
The length of bracelet between the clips will easily housed seven charms, which are firmly held in the section within the two clips. However, as I have added one charm on both sides of the bracelets on the outer sections of the clips I have found that they frustratingly fall down to the clasp area of the bracelet and attach themselves onto the threads. I can partly resolve this issue by adding a safety chain, which will screw onto the threads, but obviously this will not prevent the issue with the moving charms. It would have been useful if I could relocate the clips, but unfortunately, the bracelet has been designed in such a way that I cannot do this.
I personally feel that the bracelet is best suited for either solely threading a combination of charms and beads within the clips or entirely filling the bracelet unless you don't mind your charms jiggling around. Another small problem I am experiencing is that the bracelet is a little awkward to place onto my wrist now that I have added more charms as it has become more rigid and as a consequence, I find it difficult to hold whilst trying to close the clasp. Consequently, a little more time and patience is needed when I am putting the bracelet onto my wrist.
When I first bought my bracelet it felt quite light on my wrist, but as I have added more charms I am able to feel a slight weight although I have now got used to this. Despite my grumbles I am extremely happy with my bracelet as it is of a high quality and is extremely personal. I was never a fan of gold charm bracelets where the various charms hang from the bracelet, but I adore Pandora, particularly as the charms are threaded so they offer a neat appearance. There are literally thousands of charms and beads from with choices of wood, silver, oxidised silver and gold with prices starting at £20 up to £700 for the gold charms adorned with diamonds. A cheaper way of filling the bracelet is to thread spacers, which are more affordable than charms and can be used in between each of the charms or beads.
~~ Price ~~
The Starter Bracelet as shown in the image above is available for £60 with My First Bracelet costing £99, which as previously discussed, includes one Murano sterling silver and glass bead together with two sterling silver clips. This would make a perfect present for that someone special in your life or it could simply be a gift to yourself. It is beautifully presented in a padded hinged box where it sits on a soft velvety cushion.
My bracelet looks as good as new with the clasp showing no signs of wear and tear despite it receiving a battering from me in the early days whilst I was trying to get used to it! Despite the few issues I have experienced I can highly recommend this bracelet and as a consequence, it receives 5 stars from me. The bracelet comes with a 12 month guarantee and my nearest Pandora store has advised that they will clean the bracelet whenever necessary free of charge provided that it contains only genuine Pandora charms.
I hope you found my review useful and thanks for reading.
