Advantages: A fun festive book, very silly, bargain price online
Disadvantages: None for us
After reading a brilliant review by Moistbabe on 'Aliens Love Panta Claus', I immediately bought it from Amazon. We are, as a family, big fans of the 'Aliens love Underpants' books by Claire Freedman and I gain a lot of fun and happiness from reading the girls these silly books at bedtime. I hadn't previously seen the Christmas version so it was nice to see that there was a new edition that we could add to our collection (even if the book isn't particularly new, it's new to us!).
This book gained extra enthusiasm for us as we told the girls the other day that we are going to visit Santa in Lapland for a week at Christmas and there is a mention of Lapland in the book! I sent the girls a 'golden invitation' from Santa inviting them to Lapland and a few days later explained that Santa had in fact sent them this book as a little gift until he sees them on Boxing Day!
A lovely festive book perfect for this time of year but with a twist, after all, how many children's book have you read which involve Santa, underpants and aliens?! It follows on nicely from Aliens love Underpants and so of course it makes sense that these wacky looking aliens would help Santa deliver presents in their spaceship when his sleigh breaks down, and that they would cheekily swap his sack for a big pair of bloomers! The very end page is awash with bloomers and pants and every time we read it we have to have a discussion about which are our favourite pants! They girls find it hilarious.
It doesn't take long at all to read and the first time I read it to the girls they complained that it was over too quickly. Because of the rhyming within the book it can't really be read all that slowly, although I do encourage them to talk about what's happening within books, it's probably best to do this at the end of the book to gain the most effect from the brilliant rhymes. For this reason I really enjoy reading this book and always favour rhyming books, being quite a big fan of Julia Donaldson's children's books it makes a nice change to read a different author.
The illustrations are brilliant and the girls particularly like one page when I have to turn it on its side to read it. Something a little different but the girls think this is brilliant.
I would say this book is going to appeal to children from around 3 ish to maybe 7, and when they have outgrown it I will take great pleasure in putting this away in my box of the girls things that I intend to keep for when they are adults to trigger happy childhood memories for them.
I will continue to read this book throughout December to my girls, and have already bought some rather silly knickers which I intend to place within their stockings on Christmas Eve. I think the silliness has caught up with me!
I managed to pick it up for less than £3 from Amazon which is a good saving on the £5.99 RRP.
