      A lovely book

      Availability

We bought this book about 6 months ago for our youngest daughter as we were starting to think about encouraging her to sit and read books, we bought this book from our local Tesco store when we were doing our shopping and it cost £3.99 which is the RRP for the book. Looking on the internet you can buy this book from Amazon but it is actually no cheaper in this instance.

      Book Information

The book was first published in January 2010 and is published by Dorling Kindersley limited. The text in the book is by Dawn Sirett, there are a number of books in this series such as colours and shapes, puppies and kittens and wild animals.

      The Cover

The front cover of the book has the publishers logo alongside the series title which is baby touch and feel, this wording is small and in yellow whereas the title of the book is in blue holographic lettering which is much larger and stands out much better on the white background of the cover. The cover is padded which we found isn't great as it make the book thicker than the spine and we have a couple of puncture wounds in the spine of the book as there is just empty space behind parts of the spine. The front cover shows a picture of two littles lambs and ones of them has a cut out bit on it's back and a piece of hard fabric behind for your little one to touch. The front cover isn't the most attractive and is a little strange in that the lambs are a real picture and then there is grass at there feet which is drawn on.

      Inside the book

Inside the book the pages are made of thick board like most little baby books, the pages are around 4 inches square and there are six double pages. Each double page has two pictures of animals one either side and the pictures are images rather than drawings but then there are extra bits drawn on to complete the pictures such as snow and grass. Some of the pages in the book tell your little one the noise the animal makes and some of the pages have a little bit of text on them, you have a foal that neighs, a pig that oinks, lambs that baa and a chick that cheeps. The other animals in the book are a puppy, a couple of kittens, a fawn, a lion cub, a seal pup, a couple of bear cubs, a penguin chick and a fox cub, the writing on the pages is very short and things such as "in the fluffy snow" and "waiting for dinner." Each of the animals has a bit of the picture cut away and a different type of fabric inside the opening for your child to have a feel of, my daughter likes to feel the ones that are more like fur than material.

      Our Thoughts

The padding of the cover causes damage to the spine which I don't like as my children have always been taught to look after books but this makes it an easy book to damage. The front cover is cute with the two little lambs but I have seen much more attractive covers and this isn't one that my daughter selects from the shelf very much. The pictures of the animals are lovely as they are actual images and with them all being of baby animals they are lovely. My daughter likes to sit and stroke the fabrics and say "ah" which is what she does when she strokes our dogs so she does associate that these are actual animals which I like as she is learning there are other animals. The cut outs for the fabric on some of the pages are quite small such as the ball on the page with the kittens, this must only be about a cm in diameter. There are very few words on each page so your child doesn't need a very long attention span to listen to this book and the fact that they can interact with the book is always something I like. I would recommend this book but it isn't a favourite with my daughter.
