Calm Down Boris! - Sam Lloyd
Advantages: Imaginative and fun
Disadvantages: Font and storyline could be improved
I purchased Calm Down Boris by Sam Lloyd after reading a favourable review on DooYoo. My young son was at the time enthralled by Usborne's 'touchy feely' book That's Not My Puppy and so this seemed a perfect accompaniment.
Calm Down Boris is a relatively large board book whereby Boris, the main character, is a hand puppet attached to the back page of the book itself. Each page, including the cover, has a hole for the hand puppet to peek through.
At the back of the book are instructions as to how to operate the puppet inside. His jaw can be opened and shut as well as rotated 360 degrees. The book also advises that you put on your best monster voice when reading it!
The storyline of this book is based around Boris who is a very loveable monster. Boris loves to give kisses but as he is so hairy, his kisses are very tickly and initially no-one wants to play with Boris. It is only when Boris inadvertently scares off a vicious dog that the other monsters see him as their hero and all want to be his friend.
The varying size and font of the text, resembling free-hand writing with perhaps a marker pen, makes it a little difficult to decipher. The story itself is also not to as high a standard as I had expected, however it certainly has a way of drawing the little ones in with activities for them to take part in such as checking Boris' fur for bugs. Children will no doubt enjoy joining in with repetitions throughout the story such as Boris' "kissy, kissy, kissy!"
My little boy is fascinated by Boris, although at 13 months old he is maybe a little too young to understand the storyline. He listens attentively however and grabs at Boris' fur when he gives his kisses!
Calm Down Boris by Sam Lloyd is available from Amazon at £6.74. There are also a number of other similar books available by Sam Lloyd incorporating different puppets.
This book is an imaginative twist on the 'touchy feely' book and makes reading to your child lots of fun. It is captivating and intriguing and is certainly a big hit with my little boy.
Summary: Imaginative and fun
