I expect there are some dooyooers out there who will groan at the very sight of this book. Though it's actually quite old, it's still used as a standard text book in some schools to teach (some would say torture!) the A-level mathematicians. I picked this up recently as I recently started a science degree in my spare time. It's a bit of a shift for me, since I spent the last eight years at college studying literature and history! The most pressing thing I needed to do when contemplating making the leap was to get my maths in order - quite a task as before I started I could barely add two and two.. and that's WITH a calculator. Back in the last Millennium, I applied for a degree course in mathematics (several years after completing my A-Levels and with no formal A-Level in Maths). What I needed was a book to get me up to speed and fast in time for my interview. My chosen text was Bostock & Chandler Core Maths and its sequel Further Maths. The book is laid out very clearly with key results easy to pick out and a number of useful examples. Had I had a little longer, I might have preferred a book that lead the reader a little more towards discovering the maths for themselves.
