      A great childrens book.

Dirty Bertie is a childrens book that was brought for my 5 year old some time ago. It is by David Roberts. I hadn't actually heard of David Roberts before this book, but is seems his books about Bertie are his most successful pieces of work to date.

The front cover of the book has the title 'Dirty Bertie' and an illustration of Bertie picking his nose - instantly appealing to little ones! The book tells the story of a little boy called Bertie who has dirty habits. These dirty habits include eating sweets off the floor, picking bogeys, hunting and playing with slugs and worms, licking the dog (after the dog has licked him) and doing a wee on the flowerbed (like the cat). He gets told off by his mum, dad, gran and big sister. Bertie soon learns not to do these things after a sequence of events (he gets ill from eating sweets off the floor, his sister throws the slugs and worms over his head and he gets a horrible hairy tongue after licking the dog). However the last page reveals a rather revolting, shocking and amusing habit that Bertie cannot stop!

The book is quite a large size and the illustrations are big, bold and spread across the pages. The illustrations are excellent, even if they are pretty vile! The second half of the book is told more by the illustrations than by the text. There are 24 pages and the book is just about the right length for the age group. There is a piece of text on each page, although there isn't a huge amount of text in the book. What I like most about the text is that it rhymes and repeats on each page ("NO BERTIE! THAT'S DIRTY, BERTIE!") which makes the book flow nicely and which my daughter really enjoys. Dirty Bertie is more of a book that you read to/with your child, rather than one to read themselves (it's not suitable for reading beginners due to long words). My daughter has had this book since she was 4 and she still gets it from the bookcase regularly to read with me. It's probably one of her favourites and she always laughs her way through it. I can imagine that all 3-6 year olds will love this book. Even those who aren't usually interested in books will be captivated by this hilariously yucky story!

The one and only downside of this book is that it's quite gross. I'm sure not all parents and grandparents would approve! Bertie may be seen as a bit of a bad influence and may even be seen to encourage little ones to copy his bad habits (although the main point of the book is to point out that bad things happen when Bertie puts his bad habits in to action. There's a lesson to be learnt here!).

The RRP of Dirty Bertie is £5.99, although you can usually find it for less (it's currently selling on Amazon for £4.49) and can be found in most bookshops etc.
