Elmer's Colours - David McKee
Advantages: Teaches colours with a very colourful character, easy to handle for little hands
I tend to take my daughters to the local library every four weeks as they both now enjoy looking at and reading books and I think this should be encouraged, one of our recent reads was this book which we borrowed for my youngest daughter who is 16 months.
The book can be bought from Amazon for £3.79 and is a hard backed board book aimed at young children.
The book is quite small only being around 6 inches square and is made of hard board to make it easy for little hands to handle. The front cover of the book is mainly white in colour with a strip of pink along the bottom and Elmer the patchwork elephant walking across the front. The book displays the authors name which is David Mckee in black lettering along with the title of the book which is also in black lettering but bigger than the authors name. The front cover is simple but bright in colour as Elmer is made up of so many colours.
In the book there are seven double pages each one showing a different colour, the first double page shows all of elmers colours in stripes across the page with Elmer appearing against them which makes a very colourful page, the writing on the page names each of the colours black, purple, blue, green, yellow, orange, red, pink and white and asks what is your favourite colour?
The following pages each show a different colour you have white for a snowman with a purple scarf to keep him warm, orange for an orange and yellow for a lemon, pink for a strawberry ice lolly, green for the grass, blue for the sky, red for the sunset and finally black for the darkest sky. Throughout the book there are little comments on the pages such as Elmer loves to watch the sunset and Elmer's ice lolly won't last long.
The pictures are all very brightly coloured like with all of the Elmer books which I think makes them good for children just learning to enjoy books. On each page Elmer is interacting with the colour in some way, on the page with the orange and the lemon Elmer is balancing an orange and a lemon on his trunk and on the page with the ice lolly Elmer is holding the ice lolly in his trunk and the background is of a beach.
This is a lovely book and my daughter enjoys sitting and reading it although she doesn't know her colours yet we sit and point the colours out as we are reading and her older sister enjoys sitting and telling her the colours too especially on the first page which shows lots of different colours. The book is easy to handle, attractive for young children and helps to teach them so certainly a book I would recommend.
Summary: As always a wonderful Elmer book
