      Advantages

      Disadvantages

      Great little board book

      ***The Background***

Axel Scheffler has collaborated with Julia Donaldson on many occasions with her popular books such as The Gruffalo but this time he does it with the help of MacMillan Publishers who supply the text. This is the second book in the series that we’ve looked at.

      ***The Story***

“Freddy’s a frog with goggly eyes,
He’s small and fat and loves catching flies.”

The book then goes on to show him squelching in the muddy slime while other frogs took on in dismay. They soon cheer up though when they all have a bouncing race and then we see Freddy taking a relaxing nap.

      The books ends with,

“And when the stars come out and the moon is bright,
What Freddy loves best is to croak through the night.”

      ***The Illustrations***

This book has bold black text on a white background, at one side of the double page. The other side shows comical pictures of what Freddy is getting up to. The pictures are clear and bright and there is no mistaking the similarity between these and such works as The Smartest Giant by Julia Donaldson.

      ***The Croaker***

Just as with Pip the Puppy, this book has a button on the front that makes a noise. As you would expect with a book about a frog, it’s a croaking sort of noise. This is quite a gentle sound unlike some of these noisy books and it does seem to have lasted quite well. Unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be any way of changing the battery so if it does stop working then you can’t replace it.

      ***My Thoughts***

This board book is another good example of how books can be so much more fun for toddlers if there is an additional thing to do. Flaps and touchy feely bits are always a favourite with my son but he also likes to make a noise so this book is ideal.

Unfortunately, a lot of noisy books can be very annoying to us adults but this one is quite a quiet and relaxing sound of the frog croaking away so isn’t quite as bad to listen to in the background.

The rhymes in this book are lovely and simple and my son loves to memorize them and read them out with me. The text is a good size and there is enough of a story in it to interest slightly older children who are learning to recognise letters and words for themselves.

I love rhyming books as it does seem to be a way of holding on to a young child’s attention and really helps to get them to use their memory. This book is a perfect example of this and the pictures to go with the text are very amusing. Above or below the text on each page is something from the main picture. There is a dragonfly, a kingfisher and a fish amongst others and this is great for encouraging a younger child to use their observation skills to find it in the big picture.

I have to say I’m quite impressed with the amount of time the croaker has lasted with this book as we have had it for at least a year now and my son does look at it quite a bit. It has become slightly quieter with time but is still very much audible.

      ***Other Books In This Series***

      Pip the Puppy
      Lizzy the Lamb

Freddy's a frog with goggly eyes. He's small and fat and loves catching flies. Beautifully illustrated by Axel Scheffler, this charming book is one of four board book editions of the successful Buggy Buddies series (60,000 sold worldwide!) with a noisy, animal sound-chip on the front cover.
