Advantages: Lovely hand painted pictures
Disadvantages: Words will need explaining to little ones
I'm really getting into reading children's books to my little one and a recent addition was a book called "Holly" I chose it as it had a picture of a cat on there an my mother in law has a cat called Holly.
The book is hard back (but I have noticed you can also get it in paperback) and the cover is a burnt orange colour with the title "Holly" and Author "Ruth Brown" in black bold writing. There is a picture of a little kitten sat down on the front.
On the back is a description of the book and some comments from critics which include -
"Adorable!" - The Times
"Something very special indeed." - Guardian
The book is based on a true story of a kitten that was abandoned and rehomed with a loving family around Christmas time (hence the name Holly).
The story takes you through Holly's life from when she is a young energetic, excitable, inquisitive kitten to an affectionate beloved cat.
The book is written in a simple manner but contains some words which will have to be explained to young children such as timid, inquisitive, and acrobatic. But to me this isn't a bad thing as learning from book is half the fun.
The book is illustrated by Ruth herself the illustrations are hand painted, detailed and full of interest. In every picture there is a picture of Holly as she is growing up.
The book consists of 14 pages but can be read in 5-10 minuets as the story is very brief. Personally it's not a book I would want to read over and over again so possibly grab a copy from the library or grab a copy for only £3.00 off Amazon.
I think it's best for pre school children - be prepared to answer questions about the words but the book is true to life and if you have ever owned a cat will of experienced some of what Holly does.
It is funny and definitely has the ahhh factor.
Definitely worth a read.
