Advantages: Beautifully Illustrated, Lovely Story

Disadvantages: None

I was lucky enough to be given this book as a leaving present from a collegue when I was about to go on Maternity leave and although my baby is too young to appreciate it yet, I think it's fabulous.

'How To Catch a Star' is a book written and illustrated by Oliver Jeffers. It has a retail price printed on it of £5.99 and the back page tells the reader that it is published by HarperCollins. The front cover tells me that it was shortlisted for the Booktrust Early Years Award 2004.

The book tells the story of a boy who loves stars so much that he wishes that he had one of his own. The story follows his mission to try and find a star to keep for himself! First he tries to find a star that may have got tired and fallen from the sky, but there isn't one. When a star finally appears in the sky he tries to jump up and grab it, which doesn't work either. He then tries climbing up the tallest tree he can find and still can't reach. Eventually he does manage to get a star of his own, but I won't ruin it for you!

I love the touches of humour in this book and my favourite page has to be this one, which always makes me smile:

'He thought he could fly up in his spaceship and just grab the star. But his spaceship had run out of petrol last Tuesday when he flew to the moon'.

This book is wonderfully illustrated too and is lovely to look at. The pictures are quite abstract in style and really help to enhance the story. They are quite cartoony, but look as though they have been painted, not drawn.

This makes a gorgeous addition to any Children's book collection. It can be bought online at Amazon.co.uk for £2.99. It is also available in hardback.

Summary: Humourous and Lovely to Look At
