Joe's Dog is a book that my Mam bought my daughter when she had gone away wirth them for the weekend in the caravan and she had forgotton her bedtime story. The book has a RRP of £7.99 although the price sticker is still on the book so I know she only paid £4.99 for it. The book is written by Angela Joy and Nicola Slater provides the illustrations for it.
The book is shaped like a dog kennel and the title of the book is written across the top of the kennel where you may find the dogs name. The kennel is red in colour and houses a very long hair dog peeping through the opening, you can see the dogs nose and paws and then just a mass of fur which feels lovely and soft, the dog looks like the type of dog from the Dulux adverts. There is a picture of a little boy one side of the kennel opening and another dog the other side of the opening. The books cover is attractive and my youngest daughter likes to sit and stroke the dog inside.
Inside the book you find that the little boys name is Joe and he and his Mam are looking for a dog for him. The dog which is poking through the front ocver is on the second page of the book and Joe says that he would like that dog but the dog is shy and runs away. The following pages introduce ten different dogs and gives a description of each one such as " "a tall lanky swanky dog" or " a wary hairy scaredy dog" At the end of the ten dogs Joe tells his Mother that he doesn't want any of those dogs but would like the little shy dog which is just peeping around the corner of the page and the book ends with Joe holding his new dog and looking very happy.
On some pages of the book some of the dogs fur are made out of different soft materials so it can take quite some time to get through this book with my youngest as she wants to stroke all the dogs. There isn't many words on most of the pages although my daughter who is beginning to learn to read wouldn't be able to read it as the words are quite difficult for a child just starting such as dizzy, frizzy, blinky and scaredy. The pictures of the dog show exactly what is being described, the scaredy dog is a little dog scared of it's own shadow, the bobbly dog is a poodle and the chubby tubby dog is big and fat. The pictures are bold in colour and not too detailed, each dog has a little accessory such as a kennel, a bed or even a pile of bones.
My eldest daughter used to enjoy this book but I would now say at 4 1/2 she finds it a little boring however my youngest daughter now loves the book and will even sit with it on her own just simply stroking the dogs in it. I would say though that compared to other books of a similar kind it seems a little over priced at a RP of £7.99 as I have seen plenty of this type of book for around £5 to £6.
