While browsing for things for my youngest son's Christmas I came across this book on Amazon. He adores Charley bear and as he had a number of other items from the same character I thought he would enjoy this book as stocking filler. The description on Amazon didn't really say much other than it was a charley bear book with sounds. I have to be honest I thought it was going to be a full sound book with a variation of buttons and phrases, but this isn't so.
Little charley bear loves dressing up and going on adventures. In this book we follow Charley bear and his friends in their adventures. Along the way we get to see what that naught little bear is up to, and where he is hiding. It is just like the TV series which is great but can also be a little repetitive. In each page we visit a different friend of charley bear and a new adventure begins. There is a small paw button which indicates when little one should press the sound button. You can do anything with your imagination, especially when Charley bear and his friends are around!
This is the point that disappointed us. There is only one button, and it only has one phrase. Who are you today Charley bear? I suppose that is what you get for ordering online as when it said sound book I just assumed it was 'sounds' rather than just one saying over and over again. Also as there is only one button the batteries ran out within a month. We did not overly use the book so it was a little disappointing. The voice is clear enough and it is spoken is James Corden as it is in the series.
The pictures are full of detail and bold enough to hold younger children's attention. The words are simple and this makes the story very easy to follow. It is a very short book, and each page only has a short description of words, so it is over in just a few minutes. I would say it is more a picture book than anything else. It isn't really a story as such as the scenes change so quickly with just a few words for each page. It does include a wide range of Charley bears friends so if your child is a fan they will instantly recognise them. There are lots of pictures for little one to point at and talk about but as there are only a handful of pages it is still a little boring. The illustrations are what make the book and for that reason I would say it is aimed at a parent to read to a young child between one or two years old.
The one advantage I can find with this book is that it is a board book. This is perfect for the age recommendation, especially as it is generally toddlers that enjoy Charley bear. My son loves to point at the pictures but this often ends up with books becoming grubby fast, so being able to wipe this down with a cloth to make it look brand new is a huge advantage. Unfortunately this book was not a huge hit in our house. My two children aged four and five were not interested as there is just no substance to it at all. My youngest son who is two did enjoy it at first especially as it was charley bear.
After a few reads and pressing the button he became bored quickly. We have read it a few times, but now it just sits on the shelf unused. As the story is very short and there are minimal words it replied on the sound feature. The sound feature is the same phrase over and over again which means even my young son lost interest quickly. At £6 retail there are much more interesting and engaging books for toddlers available, so unfortunately I would not recommend this unless your child is Charley bear daft.
