      Advantages

      Disadvantages

Another great book by Eric Carle

'Little Cloud' is one of the less well known Eric Carle books in comparison to the 'The very hungry caterpillar' and 'The bad-tempered ladybird'. It is nonetheless, definitely worth a mention as it is a charming book, well loved by the children I have read it to.

      ~ The Story ~

It's about a little cloud who drifts along in the sky behind all of the other larger clouds which eventually move out of it's sight.

The little cloud who now feels like a giant cloud as it isn't being 'dwarfed' by all of the larger ones, drifts along and changes itself in to many things: a sheep, an aeroplane, a shark, a rabbit etc.

On each change of shape a reason is given for the little cloud changing in to it's chosen object, e.g. it loved to watch rabbits dash across the meadow & it liked the way trees never moved and stayed in one place.

Eventually all of the larger clouds drift back and ask the little one to come back to the group until finally they all change in to one BIG cloud and it rains.

      ~ Illustrations ~

For me, it is the illustrative aspect of this book that makes it. If you have ever, like me looked up in to the sky and made different shapes out of clouds then you will know what I mean.

All of the pages are, not surprisingly set against a sponge effect blue back drop to resemble the sky.

When little cloud changes in to all of the different objects, they take up a whole double page and are very very bold and simple that they could almost have been drawn by a child.

They are typical of Eric Carle's style, bold and simple with a collage type effect to them.

      ~ Style ~

The style is simple and appeals to young children. They can join in with ' Little Cloud changed in to .................' and use the picture cues to help them with what it changed in to.

      ~ Age Range ~

I have read this to 3 - 5 year olds.

Little Cloud loves changing shape - he can be a horse, a tree, and even a clown! At the end of the story he joins all the other clouds in the sky to make one big cloud - and then it rains!
