As the title of the book implies this is a very simple story about a baby elephant called Jim who lived with his Mum in the Jungle. Jim and his Mum did everything together and they were never without each other until one day they decided to play hide and seek.............
During the game, Jim got lost. He hunted high and low for his Mum: among the thick leaves, in the long grass, on the high mountains and in the deep river.
Jim felt very sad and lonely and climbed on to an island in the middle of the river............ when suddenly the island moved and to the delight of Jim and his Mum, the island was in fact the large back of his Mum!!
The book ends with Jim and his Mum giving each other a huge hug.
~ The Illustrations ~
The colours used in this book are very rich and vibrant, depicting a luscious jungle environment along with some other animals that are found in the jungle.
The emotions of both Jim and his Mum are extremely well presented by Guy Parker-Rees. The joy that the inseparable pair feel when playing with each other and the sheer loneliness and sadness felt by Jim as he desperately seeks out his Mum.
Guy Parker-Rees portrays the smallness of Jim within the jungle when on his own, the tall trees and long grass almost swamp him which emphasises how lonely and desperate Jim is all alone in the jungle.
~ Style and Format ~
This is an extremely simple but effective book. The text is simple and quite large with a simple font which is great for emergent readers and young children can follow and join in with the text after the first or second reading.
Many of you will be familiar with 'lift-the-flap' books whereas this book is a 'flip-flap' book. In simple terms, within a double page spread there is a insert that is about 3/4 the size of the full page so that the insert has sections that match both the left and right pages. The flap quite simply, flips over.
What I also like about this book is that it introduces some vocabulary relating to 'Measure', i.e. length and height, for example long, high, deep and thick.
~ About the author ~
Guy Parker-Rees was born in Zimbabwe and at the age of 3 came to England.
He studied English and Philosophy at York Uni and then founded 'Art Attack' which was a mural painting co-operative running workshops and play schemes.
He then went on to teach Art and Crafts at a hospital in Cardiff working with people with learning difficulties. His interest in people with difficulties then led him to set up an Art Therapy Department for people with mental health problems.
Guy Parker -Rees has been a freelance illustrator since 1989 and has illustrated over 40 children's books.
~ My verdict ~
This is a charming children's book which is able to grab the attention of children from approximately two years onwards. It offers the opportunity to discuss what they should do if they became lost or how they would feel if they became separated from the adult they were out with, great for discussing emotions.
