Advantages: Light-hearted look at potty training.

Disadvantages: The princess could appeal to girls more than boys!

'I want my potty' is a fantastically humorous book for all of you going through the sometimes nighmare experience of potty training!

~ The author / Tony Ross ~

Tony Ross went to Liverpool's School of Art and is a prolific writer and illustrator of children's picture books. The books listed below all deal with social and emotional areas of childhood learning and are a great resource to use with children dealing with any of the issues:

I want my Mum
I want a sister
I want my dinner
I don't want to wash my hands
I want to be .....

~ The story ~

In short it's a tale of potty training featuring a little princess who is absolutely fed up with nappies:

"Nappies are YUUECH, there MUST be something better!" said the little princess.

In response to this, her Mum, the Queen shows her a potty and tells her that this is the place!

Initially the princess thinks that the potty is even worse than nappies but with great determination on the Queen's part she is forced to sit on the potty and learn.

Then begins a humorous look at what happens during this potty training:
* sometimes the potty is too far away for her to get there on time.
* she thinks it would be funny to sit on her crown and use the 'empty' potty as a crown.
* sometimes she just plain falls off the potty.

Finally the little princess grows to love her potty and relishes the praise everyone gives her when using it.

But..........one day she was playing at the very top of the castle and screams "I WANT MY POTTY!"

So begins a huge rush from the maid, who passes numerous members of the household who all begin to shout "She wants her potty!"

The maid eventually finds it, the admiral had been using it as one of his toy boats......as quick as a flash the maid runs back to the top of the castle with the potty but it arrives ....................a little too late!!
Let's face it, even princesses can have accidents now and then.

~ The illustrations ~

For children, these are very bright and bold, set against a white back drop and therefore very appealing.
The things that the princess does with the potty will make children giggle.

For adults who have gone through the experience of potty training their little ones, the illustrations are particularly amusing so it isn't dull reading for you!

* The facial expression and the redness of her face when doing what needs to be done on the potty are great.
* The way that she proudly shows her 'produce' to all and sundry, who have to look gleefully on is so reminiscent and true of potty training toddlers.
* I love the 'L' plate on the back of the potty.

These are just a few examples of the very witty illustrations Tony Ross depicts in this book.................he really must have gone through this with his own daughter to be so 'spot on' with his ideas!

Nice review of a nice book. I like the series. It didn't help with potty training though.

My daughter loved this book - not sure if it actually helped with the toilet training though! Good review!
