I bought several of Dick Bruna's childrens' books for my daughter as I recognised the familiar Miffy character on some of them, for which much merchandise is available. The character of Poppy Pig is just as endearing.
The book "Poppy Pig" was originally written in Dutch in the 1980s, and this version is translated into English. It is illustrated throughout in the same style as the cover illustration, which is somewhat reminiscent of the Mr Men type pictures - a black line drawing coloured in mainly in primary colours. There are 12 double pages, with text on the left pages and pictures on the right pages.
The story of "Poppy Pig" is about a pig who lives in a little house, does all her housework, and then sits down for a nice rest. That sounds simplistic, but it is a satisfying story for little ones, and the pictures are simple yet engaging. My copy is a hardback one, which stands up well to wear and tear.
The best thing about the Poppy Pig story is the rhyming poetic style. Each page has four lines, and the second and fourth lines rhyme. This makes for a lovely lilting story - great for reading with little ones as even at a young age they enjoy the rhythm and pleasing word patterns. My three children have literally hundreds of books, but they still turn to Poppy Pig as a favourite character, and they tell me that the rhyme is one reason for this. Even my 2 year old loves it, and likes to copy the rhyming sounds.
I would highly recommend this book for children from around 2 up to about 6, and if it is difficult to get hold of a new copy I would personally go out of my way to purchase this, and other Dick Bruna books, used - they are quite different from other books available, and well worth a look as a "classic" young childrens' read.
