My daughter is at the perfect age for listening to me read her Christmas books. We went to a car boot sale and picked up lots of lovely books including a few Christmas stories.
This book is lovely for any age, as i read it to my daughter and she looks at all the lovely illustration!
The book is about Mrs Christmas who find Father Christmas is poorly on Christmas eve. He is covered in spots and needs to stay in bed, so Mrs Christmas has to finish making the presents on her own. She goes to feed the Reindeer and sees they are poorly too!. Mrs Christmas starts to finish the toys then realises that she won't be able to fly with the Reindeer! She creates her own flying bicycle and packs up her basket with everyones toys and makes her journey around the world to deliver presents.
There are 24 pages in the book, and each one is brilliantly illustrated. The pages are full of Christmas magic through the words, the snow and warmth from the lovely illustration that has been presented in the book. Penny Ives who illustrated and wrote this book has a brilliant mind. Her drawings of Father Christmas and Mrs Christmas are wonderful and what all Children believe they look like. We all have the images in our minds of the workshop in the snow with a nice warm fire where Father and Mrs Christmas would live with the Reindeer. The books ends with Mrs Christmas coming back home for her brilliant journey climbing the chimneys of children's homes to bring them presents from the North pole, where Father Christmas is outside with the Reindeer guiding Mrs Christmas with lanterns to land on the ground. When landing, she sees Father Christmas and the Reindeer are all better and Father Christmas runs Mrs Christmas a lovely warm bath after her very busy evening!. The book is paper back and is published by Puffin in the "picture puffins" range.
This book is full of magic for Children to read with loved ones in the run up to Christmas. We have 3 or 4 Christmas books and this is definitely our favourite. The illustration is so wonderful and the story is perfect for reading to children to keep the magic of Christmas alive. We all lose our love for Christmas as we age, but when reading stories to my daughter, It's made me fall in love with Christmas all over again!. This book is something I shall put away and bring out once a year to read at Christmas time with our other Christmas books. For a book being 21 years old and my daughter to be very interested is really wonderful. We will be looking up some more of Penny Ives books for her birthday presents in April.
MY DAUGHTERS OPINION:
Like some of the other reviews I have done on books and toys, I have given my daughters opinion on the book as I believe a child's view on the product matters the most. My daughter Hollie is 2 and a half and loves having books read to her. We sit down every morning and evening and read a book together. I read the story to her while she is looking at the pictures and she will tell me what is in the pictures. With this book she gets very excited by it. There is so much for her to look at. Penny Ives hasn't left any little detail out at all. It's all there for you to lose yourself in. Hollie was in awe of Father Christmas's home. She was pointing at all the little things she could spot. He has some reindeer slippers next to his bed and Hollie was telling me he needed to wear them to keep his feet warm as he was poorly. She really enjoyed reading this book as i know she would also suggest this book as a Christmas must have!.
It is available NEW on amazon for £5.36. We bought ours from a car boot sale for around 20p as used and an old library book.
The book was first published in 1990 making the story the same age as me!. I remember as a child reading such wonderful stories and the older the story, the better the illustration. I think these days authors prefer the keep their illustration simple and digital whereas you can really see this book was drawn/painted and then copied.
