I am a mother of two and a complete bookworm and so I have a small library of children's books and love nothing more than reading a story! My love of books has been passed to my eldest and she is often to be found reading whereas the youngest doesn't really see the point unless it is bedtime, so with her new reading books we set to with little interest or success I have to agree Biff and chip do not inspire me either, So I called upon our family expert who knows my daughter better than her teacher and is a school literacy adviser!
Following our conversation and a recommendation of Julia Donaldson song bird's books a parcel duly arrived for the little one after much excitement of the opening and when she had finally stopped popping all the bubble wrap she looked at the books and whether it was a combination of being from Auntie and being written by Julia Donaldson (Tabby Mc Tat is her favourite) she wanted to read!
What are they?
Songbirds is a reading scheme which contain phonic stories these stories are written by the brilliant Julia Donaldson (gruffalo) obviously each story is focusing on certain letters such as Top Cat which is focusing on M,C,T,P,A, O , with such limited letters you could be forgiven for thinking that there wouldn't be a very good story but the illustrations and the rhyming text make this a very good read.
The Songbird books are a developmental series which gradually progress as your child gains in confidence and reading ability.
Cost and stockist:
We obviously were given the whole series by my sister-in-law so I didn't pay for them great result! So the complete series rrp is £128.82 ouch! You can of course get them cheaper and for the first series Amazon stock it at £6.46 for 12 stories which I am sure you agree is a bargain Amazon also have the complete set which is 6 stories per level and goes to level 6 for £25.00 this is the one I would recommend as keeps pace with your child and means you have a book as soon as they are ready to move on keeping the enthusiasm see www.amazon.co.uk .
Well not only are these endorsed by an expert , I as a parent of what can only be described as a lazy uninterested reader also recommend these since we have had these she has read 4 and whilst writing this very excitedly and with great pride has just read one to her Uncle!
To me reading is a joy and it is something I wish to pass on to my children and any book that inspires them to read is brilliant in my book and these written by the brilliant Julia Donaldson are superb with lovely illustrations.
I am sure you have guessed but yes I recommend these wholeheartedly a great aid to educate your child in a fun way.
