On a recent trip to our local library I noticed all the Christmas story books out on display. I couldn't hide my excitement, I am a big kid when it comes to Christmas and now I have two small boys it can only get better. So you guessed it I had to get a book for my two and a half year old about Christmas.
I instantly liked the look of the cover of this book and my son liked it because it had Santa on the front of it. It looked like a fun colourful children book. It said it came with a magic sliding strip and I was intrigued by this. It seemed like it would add a bit more fun to the book.
On the front cover are Santa and his reindeers flying over a winter looking scene with a sleigh full of presents. I think this would appeal to any child. In big gold letters across the top is the title 'Santa's missing reindeer'.
The book is illustrated by Dan Crisp. The pictures cover the whole page with the writing in each corner written on top of the picture. Each double spread is a scene and the scene looks like it could come alive. It is so bright and colourful yet very child like. My son loved looking at the pictures and pointing things out to me. There are four different scenes as you go through the short story.
As for the sliding strip it is ok but didn't seem to impress my son that much. It is a clear plastic strip that is threaded through each page and stands proud of the actually page. It has the picture of Santa in his sleigh full of presents being pulled by his reindeers. I guess it is a nice touch but I don't feel it adds much.
The story is basically about Santa and the other reindeers on their hunt to find the missing reindeer. The story is very simple and easy to follow. It is quite repetitive which is helpful for a young child in building their vocabulary. There is a rhyming pattern to the text and I do find it easier and more fun to read.
My son really enjoyed the book and sat quietly throughout. He seemed to really like the pictures and with Christmas coming soon it got us both excited! I would recommend this to a young toddler I think as they get older they will want more than this book can give.
You can buy it from Amazon for £5 new or there are some available on the market place. I think £5 is probably the maximum price I would pay. I can't see my soon wanting this book reading when it isn't Christmas or maybe that's just me really!
