Advantages: nice and bright
Disadvantages: box is a bit flimsy
This is a review of the Scooby Doo Mystery mini library I recently picked up for our daughter on a shopping trip when I needed to distract her knowing we would be stuck waiting in a boring queue for a while. I was brought up on the Scooby Doo cartoons so bought the set hoping to introduce my daughter to the gang.
What is it?
The library set is a small square shaped box which contains six mini hard board books, each one titled after one of the characters in the famous cartoon. Shaggy, Scooby, Fred, Velma, Daphne plus a book of monsters and ghouls make up the set.
Extra
The back page of each book makes up a jigsaw of the mystery machine vehicle that the van use to get around. Did you know that the van actually belongs to Daphne whose parents bought the mystery machine?! Also, in the Scooby book, it claims that Scooby is the only four pawed member of the team but what about Scrappy Doo?
In use
The books are mainly pictures and on the container it states they are not suitable for under threes but I am not sure why as my 19 month daughter laughs with delight when we get the set out and look at them together. One of her favourite questions is "What do you do when you see a monster?" and she screams and waves her hands so these books have added to the fun of this. She is too young to do the jigsaw but loves putting the books in and out of the box and looking at the pictures together.
My thoughts
There is not much of a storyline with these books. I thought there may be some clues in the character books that link up to the monsters but that is not really what happens in the books. I don't suppose it really matters though.
Price and availability
On the back of the box it is printed £3.99 but we picked these up from our local Pound World shop so they were a bit of a bargain really. For that price, I don't really mind that one side of the box almost immedately came apart when we were playing with the set.
Final word
The colours are bright and the pictures are fun in this book. They are a good introduction to reading and one that can be linked in with fans of the cartoon. We are already getting used to offering our daughter scooby snacks during the day so we really get into the swing of the theme! Whilst I don't expect them to last a long time in the hands of our distructive daughter, for the price paid, I think these are great.
