The Darren Shan series has spanned over 12 books and it must be stressed, Sons of destiny is a fitting finale to a quite marvellous saga. One question remained unanswered above all over the duration of the saga and this was who would prevail; Darren Shan and the Vampires or Steve and the Vampaneze. This question is finally answered in this final book.
At the close of Book Eleven, Darren discovered Steves' son, Darius, is actually Darren's own Nephew as Steve had married Daren's sister some years ago. Steve had escaped at the close of the battle in the last book, leaving Darren with the nephew who is genuinely shocked by his father's madness.
Darren takes Darius to his mother, and has a tender reunion with the sister who thought
Darren was dead since the first book. The brief reunion is full of shocks as Darren Shan reveals that he himself is an vampire and has many vampire allies. He also stresses that Steve is not how she envisaged and reveals his former friends true colours. Darren then saves Darius (Steves' son) by feeding him some of his vampire blood and changing him from a Vampaneze to a normal vampire. Darren is greatly weakened by this, but he is successful.
The climax emerges when it emerges that the Vampaneze have taken over the Vampire Circus and caught Darrens' friends as hostage. The battle wages and Darren seeks the final showdown with the Lord of the Vampaneze, Steve Leonard. Darren severely wounds Steve and as Steve lies dieing, Mr Tiny emerges and tells Darren that he is destined to turn evil. Darren however defeats fate by killing himself.
Darren now finds himself trapped in the Lake of Souls, a place where he and Harkat (a little person) visited in the 10th book. Mr Tinys' daughter, the witch Evanna rescues Darren from the lake. He then finds himself back at the Cirque Du Freak on the day he went to the infamous show in the first book. He takes the form of a dwarf due to Evannas' assistance and is warmed to see his dead friends all alive. Mr Tiny had stated that whoever prevailed out of Darren and Steve would become evil and take control of the world. This was something Darren greatly feared and remarkably, managed to defy; one which seemed he would not be able to evade.
This ending is so well plotted, with all loose ends tied and unanswered questions quelled. The manner in which Darren changes his own destiny to the outrage of Des Tiny is astonishing. Overall a remarkable series which is full of twists and turns and keeps the reader hooked from book 1 to 12. A highly recommendable series.
