      Very helpful

A lovely little book that encourages development in so many ways

This is one book in a whole collection of the same title. That's not my Kitten, Hamster, Princess, Teddy Bear... you get the picture right?
I buy a lot of these books for my niece Holly and have also came across them in my role as a Nursery Nurse a few years ago. They are lovely, delightful educational books which are roughly aimed at children from nine months up to two years.
Firstly the books are durable as they are chunky board books and little children are unable to rip them or screw up the pages (anyone with little ones will fully appreciate this.) The pages are also glossy (sorry for my lack of wording here but I can't think of the exact term) but basically I mean they can be wiped down easily if your little one happens to scribble on the pages or drop their juice all over the cover. As they are board books it also means that a small child can turn over the pages easier than they would be able to in a thin paper book.
On each page of this book we meet a particular type of friendly, brightly coloured kitten. The words are pretty simple
'That's not my kitten, her fur is too soft.' Or 'That's not my kitten, her nose is too squishy.' As this is a touchy feely book the child is able to feel what is being described, they can experience different textures and fabrics. Lots of materials are used from hair to rubber and felt.
This is excellent in child development for a few reasons. Firstly, the child is able to feel the adjective described therefore gaining a sense of language through experience. A child can come to an understanding what 'soft, hard, prickly, fury' feels like. It also helps children familiarise themselves with certain body parts and also certain animal body parts such as whiskers and paws.
The repetitiveness of the dialogue also means that slightly older children can read along with you through memory. The children in my nursery room could often recite the whole book by themselves; which again is good as it helps with memory and vocabulary.
As well as being educational it is also great fun. My niece who is eleven months old loves feeling the different textures and enjoys turning the pages and waiting for the end of the story when finally you find 'your kitten.'
'That's MY kitten, her eyes are so shiny.' Or something to that effect!
I would highly recommend these books and the Kitten one is my absolute favourite. From personal experience children never get bored of hearing it over and over again (even if the adults do.)
Overall it is a wonderful little book which teaches your child so much and is beautiful to look at. It is also part of a lovely collection which looks wonderful In a nursery or bedroom.
