The Ancient Greeks Activity book

We have books on various history topics bought as and when Little Miss is doing a topic at school. Most of the information she is able to glean from the internet but I feel that it is still important to be reading books, and activity books are an ideal way into this.
The front of the book is quite busy with various aspects of Ancient Greek life being depicted and the back of the book features The Odyssey game with instructions on how to play the game. I think the fact that there isn't the usual blurb on the back of the book makes it instantly appealing to children.

The first page is entitled The Ancient Greeks' World and has a range of facts about Ancient Greece which children then have to add to the simple map drawing- there are lines for them to add the names to.
There is a double page spread on the Olymian gods, with information about the gods in general and then information specific to 6 gods and goddesses. Children have to read the information and match it to the picture of each god, which isn't too tricky because the gods are very clearly drawn.

There is also a page on how to wear a peplos and a chiton, with step by step simple instructions; we have tried this and it does look fairly authentic.
The whole of the book is in black and white which I think makes it simpler without lots of colour to detract from the activities. It covers lots of aspects of Ancient Greek life including the Olympic Games, The Odyssey (a reading comprehension), Greek Vase Painting with a vase to design, The Greek Alphabet with a sectret code to unravel, as well as other activities. There is a mask to cut out, a crossword, and a programme of events for the Olympic games, and in this activity, children can cut out the athletes and decide on their own events.

It is published by The British Museum Press, ISBN 978-0-7141-2176-5

VERDICT...

The book is easy to read and has lots of different activities to give children a basic knowledge of this era. The font is easy to read and in my opinion there is just enough information for children, with the facts being set out in small sections; too much reading and they can tend to go into overload.
Little Miss enjoyed doing the activities and used the information and completed activities for a file she had to complete for school

Thanks for reading
