The Boys' Colouring Book (Paperback)
Advantages: 41 pictures to colour, uncomplicated, bold and crisp
Disadvantages: It doesn't last forever
Recently my four year old son has become obsessed with anything art. He loves his sticking and making things, using his imagination with drawing which has certainly come on in the last few months and also colouring. This has also developed in the last year from scribbling over the top of a picture to actually defining sections of the pictures to colour differently. I am always on the lookout for fun art things and one of my favourite shops for my son is 'The Works' and this is where I picked this fantastic boys colouring book up from. Just having a quick flick through I knew it was going to be a good colouring book for my son.
This colouring book is a decent size measuring 30cms by 21cms. The pages feel slightly thicker than normal A4 paper but still I would not recommend using felt tip pens as it does go through to the other side. Most pages are used individually with a different picture on each page as well as a couple of double page spread pictures in there too. The pictures are big and bold using up most of the page provided. The outlines of the pictures are in a deep black bold making it easy for young child to define the parts of the picture. The pictures are quite simple with not too much small detail which makes it ideal for a nursery school child of my son's age. There are however still plenty of different parts of the picture allowing your child to use different colours and advance on their colouring skills.
In total there are forty one different pictures to colour of this six are double page spreads. The double page spreads are a six slice pizza with different toppings on each slice, a dinosaur scene with five different dinosaurs in the scene, a steam train with two open carriages, a large selection of tools, musical instruments and a huge fire engine. Other examples of pictures in this book are a full single page rocket, a football star, an aeroplane, two racing cars scene, a dumper truck, a large spider and many more. All the pictures as you would expect are perfect for a little boy. There is no fear of a princess or a baby in this colouring book. Not that I think there is anything wrong with a boy colouring such pictures in.
I feel not only is colouring fun for a child but it also develops their pencil skills. My son's pencil skills have developed quite a bit recently and he has begun trying to colour within the lines of a pictures. He isn't quite there yet but he gives it a good go. Now I can't say this colouring book alone has done this but I feel if your child has a colouring book they really like it encourages them to work a little harder at it. The pictures in this book are crisp and all the things my son likes. My son has many different colouring books but this has to be his favourite and I can see why.
*****My son's opinion*****
As I have already mentioned this colouring book is my son's favourite colouring book. If we are going out in the car on a longer journey than to the supermarket the book comes with us to keep him occupied. The only problem my son has with this book is soon it will be full! He really likes all the pictures in the book but of course he has his favourites one of which is the fire engine which I have to admit is quite impressive on a double page spread. My son seems to find colouring the pictures in this book easy enough and I love to see his creations when he has finished.
As a parent I would highly recommend it for any little boy, or girl for that matter who doesn't mind all things boyish!
