The Gruffalo - Julia Donaldson
Advantages: Great little story, nice easy rhyme for a child to follow and wonderfully illustrated
Disadvantages: None, this is a fantastic book
I had heard of this book before, but I never paid much attention to it. I was looking for books for the little one, as the books she already had were a little babyish, so I did a quick Google search for must have children's books and the book that popped up on many a page was 'The Gruffalo', swayed by public opinion, I immediately ordered myself a copy (for my daughter of course).
==What is the Gruffalo?==
Well according to the book, "He has terrible tusks and terrible claws and terrible teeth in his terrible jaws". Seriously though, 'The Gruffalo' is a children's book written by Children's Laureate, Julia Donaldson and it tells the story of a clever little mouse, who tells all the animals who want to eat him, that he is going to have tea with a creature that doesn't exist...that is until he is all alone in "The deep dark wood" and encounters the made up creature, and this time the creature wants to eat him. What follows is another piece of cunning on the mouses part, but I'm not going to spoil it for you, so you will have to read it yourself to find out, all I am going to say is, that it left me with a big smile on my face after reading it. The story is told in a the form of rhyme and it has a lovely rhythm to it when you are reading it to your child, or even sitting alone reading it, as I did when at first my daughter was a little bit scared of it.
The book is wonderfully illustrated by Axel Scheffler, who has joined forces with Julia on 14 of her books such as 'Room on the Broom', 'The Gruffalo's Child', and 'The Snail and the Whale' to name but a few. All of Julia Donaldson's books that Schleffler has participated in look familiar, he has a certain style to his work, that when you see a Donaldson book that he has worked on it is instantly recognizable.
==About the Author==
Julia Donaldson is a children's author and playwright, she is the current Children's Laureate, and in 2011 she was awarded the MBE for her services to literature. She started off writing songs for children's television, until one of her books was published in 1993. Along with her children's books, she has written plays for school drama groups.
The R.R.P for this book is £6.99 but you can purchase it for £4.19 including delivery from amazon.co.uk or as part of a set including 10 books written by the same author for £9.99 + £2.80 delivery from redhouse.co.uk (a really good site for purchasing children's books).
My daughter loves this book, although it has taken her a while to let me read it to her and sat on a shelf for a couple of months at first. I must have read this book to her at least once a day for the last month and it is a good length that she doesn't get bored or restless with it, as she has done with other books I have read to her. She loves talking about the illustrations and usually tells me what is going to happen before I even turn the page (as most kids do). I have had a look through a few of Julia Donaldsons books since purchasing this and although this is the only one I own, I can see Santa bringing a few more for Christmas. In a nutshell (excuse the pun for those who have read the book), this is a must read for anyone(not just children) of any age. There is a film of this available, you can find it on Youtube or if you wish to own a copy, you can buy it from amazon.co.uk for £5.05, the film is pretty scary for younger children though (My little one won't watch it and she's 3) and films can never replace the magic a book has anyway. Out of 5 I am going to give this 10, it is a thoroughly enjoyable tale!
Summary: Great little rhyming story about a clever little mouse
