The Knight and the Dragon was written and illustrated by Tomie de Paola. The author has written and or illustrated over 200 books and is known for the quality of his illustrations.
This book is about a knight, and a dragon, who come to the conclusion that they must fight eachother, simply because the knight has never fought a dragon, and the dragon has never fought a knight, and it just seems to be what knights and dragons do. Both prepare for this battle, starting with visits to the library to read books on fighting. then they begin to practice for the upcoming battle while the princess looks on in amusement. The fight does not go as planned, but the princess is smarter than th fellows - nosurprise there ;). She solves the problem in a very unique and entertaining manner, once again using the local library.
The book is illustrated almost in comic book fashion. There is a very limited amount of text, and the entire story could easily be grasped without it. Because of this, I think it would be very good for early readers, as well as making a great storybook. charecteristic of De Paola's work, the drawings are simple, yet effective, with limited background illustration.
My children like this book because of the simple but very entertaining story, with plenty of laughable moments. The illustrations help even the youngest child to understand the storyline. My oldest son (5) can also enjoy looking at this book on his own as it is so simple to read and grasp the story from pictures.
I like the illustrations as well, and especially like that the library is used to solve all problems. I also like that it helps children to look at things in a different way, and realise that traditional enemies can become friends.
