Advantages: Lovely story, charming, easy to read

Disadvantages: A little old-fashioned

My daughter is 22-months old and still primarily favours tactile books, or noisy ones, so I am trying out a few of the classics in the hope of tempting her towards 'proper' books and this is the latest, on loan from the library!

I remember this well from my own childhood and always enjoyed its simplistic but endearing story and its old-fashioned charm. Having been going strong for around 40-years, this book is certainly entertaining children across generations and it stands the test of time well.

The story is based around a family who unexpectedly open the front door to find a hungry, but friendly tiger who invites himself for tea. He drinks all the water in the house, and scoffs all the tea but leaves a warm feeling in the house, particularly for the young girl living there, who is fascinated by this large, cuddly creature.

Compared to books these days, this one is definately a bit old-fashioned. The pictures and colours are basic, but the story itself is timeless and my daughter enjoyed me reading it to her, even if she did get bored halfway through!

She loved pointing out the tiger and even gave him a few kisses, so I think this book got her seal of approval, even if her attention span did not last long enough for me to finish reading it.

This book has a lovely message and that is to accept everyone for who they are, despite any differences. The family in the book welcome the tiger with open arms, despite his fearsome appearance and this is a good message for children, especially if it teaches them that looks can be deceptive.

Widely available for around £4, this book is definately a good addition to any kids book collection and I will certainly be buying it for my daughter.

Summary: A great book.
