I bought this bright colourful book for my little girl about six months ago, and it's been quite a hit in our house! It is written by Steve Smallman, who has written lots of children's books, and illustrated by Jack Tickle (not his real name, surely?).
The story is about a very greedy bee who refuses to share his nectar with any other of the busy bees. He's quite a selfish bee and doesn't really pull his weight.
One day, his greediness gets the better of him when, after over-eating, he finds he can't move. He gets help from lots of other little insects and, at the end of the story, realises the error of his ways and that it's always better to share.
Big, bright, bold!
This is a large, soft cover book with lots of bright and colourful illustrations. The bees are big and detailed, and with lots of interesting facial expressions. The pages are quite simple and not over-cluttered with lots of detail, so young readers can easily see what's going on and follow the story. It's very attractive and the story itself is simple and fun to read.
We're all in this together
This is a nice story with a moral at the end of the tale. What is good about the story is the way the other insects all club together to help the over-stuffed bee, so it's a story with a nice message that is good for young ones to learn! But despite the message, this is still fun and cute to read. It's the right length for a bedtime story and I hope will still be read in our house for a while to come!
A good buy
The Very Greedy Bee is currently on amazon for £4.49 new, or used for £2.81, which I think is a good price for such a nice book.
