My Dad bought this book for my 5 year old son after a trip to The Works bookshop. He got five books for £5 and this one is probably the one he enjoyed the most. It has a RRP of £4.99 however it is selling on Amazon for £4.79 new or used copies are selling for £0.01.

This book completely matches my sons sense of a humour, of telling a really long winded story and then at the end deciding it was all just a joke. This is probably the reason he loves this book so much.

****The Story ****

George goes into his Dad's study and see a horrible brown wrinkly thing hanging on the wall. He asks his Dad what it is. His dad tells him its too scary to talk about and when George gets excited he sits him on his knee and launches into a story about a witch sneaking into the house at night time when they all sleeping and he how he only just defeated the ugly evil witch until all that was left of her for her hand. The dad explains how he hung the witches hand on the wall as a reminder to lock the doors at night. An intrigued George asks if it really is a witches hand, so his dad admits that really it is just a leaf that has dried up.


*** Layout ***

Great for the imagination. The book builds a lot of suspense and provides detailed descriptions of the witch and the battle alongside great illustrations. There is quite a lot of text however so this is a book I would read to my son and not one he could manage by himself. The book is paperback and slightly wider than A4.


**** My Opinion ****

At first glance I was slightly concerned this book would cause nightmares as a bedtime story. However, the way it ends explaining it was all made up and there is an innocent explanation prevents this. My son loves this book and snuggling up pretending to be scared of the witch. I would say it is a cleverly written and well thought out book that provides plenty of fuel for the imagination

One to look for but I would say it is more of a boys read.
