My daughter recieved this nursery rhyme book for christmas and it has been well used since then. It was designed as part of Vtech "Smart Step" programme which encourages children to develop reading, writing, speech and hand and eye coordination. My daughter received it when she was 14 months but it is suitable from 6 months onwards.
The book is made out of plastic and looks some what like a personal organiser. The plastic is very tough and has taken many batterings and has not been wounded yet!! The book is very bright and fun looking with bold colours, the main being red, yellow and green.
The book is specifically aimed at babies from 6 months old so the pages of the book are very easy to turn with colour tabs to help your child to turn the pages themselves.
As the book is made out of plastic it has been extremly easy to clean as you just wipe any mess off. Unlike many of my daughters other plastic toys such as bumbling bees and keyboards this book has no nasty corners or gaps to hide crumbs and dirt in.
It is also very useful that batteries are actually included with this toy. Unfortunately my daughter had a lot of electrical toys for christmas with no batteries in them. We had bought a few but we found our day was spent swapping them between toys - though this was perhaps because we wanted to play them rather than my daughter persisting!!
There are six numbered pages each having a different nursey rhyme on them. The nursey rhymes are written boldy in unjoined black with pictures surrounding them which relate to the nursery rhymes.
The six nursery rhymes features are:-
* Mary had a little lamb
* Pat a cake
* This little piggy went to market
* Hickory Dickory Dock
* Hey diddle diddle
* Twinkle twinkle little star
When you first open the book you see two arrows in between the pages, one pointing to the left and one to the right, these are for the singing/talking actions. The book automatically turns itself on when opened and off when closed or unused for about five minutes.
The nursery rhyme on the left hand side automatically starts singing to you. To choose which one plays you press the arrow pointing to it. At 16 months my daughter has only just started understanding this so I am pleased that you do not have to press a button to start it. By pressing the arrow again after the nursery rhyme has been played you can hear phrases relating to the rhyme. For example after hearing twinkle twinkle little star it says "make a wish".
The voice is clear and precise and very human like which is a nice surprise. It also has an English accent which is great.
I have not yet had to replace batteries but it takes 2 "AAA batteries. These are of course safely hidden and kept in the spine of the book.
The nursery rhyme book was bought for £9.99 from Woolworths. I have found it to be very good value for money as it is a toy which gets a lot of use and can stand the brute force of my daughter.
It is great to find educational toys which are interesting and fun to play with as babies learn through play and if it is boring then obviously they will not learn anything.
I recommend this book as a fun learning tool and a great book for you both to share together. I hope you will have as much fun with it as we have.
Thanks for reading X
This is a bright coloured plastic based musical nursery rhyme book and in my opinion is the best thing since sliced bread! It has six common nursery rhymes on it, like Hickory dickory dock, twinkle twinkle little star etc. And it also has two buttons to press so it either plays the song to go with the nursery rhyme or it does an action relating to the song, e.g. claps for pat a cake. It is big and bulky and easy for little clumsy hands to turn the pages it even has plastic flaps sticking out for each page, so that the baby/toddler can turn the pages using them. It also extremely strong so that when it gets thrown across the room in a temper it doesn’t break! This is a good toy for a large age range it can be sung to young babies, older babies will like pushing the buttons and opening and closing the book and toddlers can try and copy the songs and the actions. I think this was excellent value for money and would defiantly buy it as a gift for another baby.
