Asda Stainless Steel Jug Kettle
by Biskey Kettles come and kettles go, and my experience is that they come and go a little too often these days. Having said that, I think with these cheaper kettles you can just as easily get a good one as a bad one. If something's going to go wrong, it will probably go wrong sooner rather than later and supermarkets like Asda are superb when it ... comes to returning faulty goods. This is what happened to me last time. I'd bought a kettle from Asda, something went wrong with it and so I took it back. Normally when a shop asks if I'd like an exchange or the money, I take the money and shop elsewhere; but because Asda are so no-nonsense about it, I thought I'd give them another chance and in fact decided on this kettle as my replacement. It was different to the one I'd taken back and certainly not expensive. ~ Features ~ When I got it home I was really rather pleased. The brushed stainless steel look is something I particularly like and it fitted in well with my other appliances. The lid was easy to open with its "pinch catch" mechanism, and there was a good feel to it - not "tinny". The water gauge meant that you could see how full it was and also see that the water was boiling. A light on the side indicated that the kettle was on, once you'd depressed the switch at the back. The feature I most liked was the power base. I think the term they use for this is a "swivel" base, but the significant point is that it's the type of base from which you can lift the kettle clear without having to unplug anything, or without having to wield the kettle and the lead at the same time. If you've never used this type before, it's surprising just how much more convenient it is. Just lift off and use. ~ Reliability ~ At the end of the day (and for that matter, at the beginning of the day even more so) we want a kettle that is: a) Going to boil quickly b) Going to boil quietly c) Going to switch itself off, because nine times out of ten we'll have forgotten that we switched it on in the first place This delivers on all three counts. I've had this for well over a year, possibly two years, and it has shown no sign of failing. Admittedly, they don't, do they? They lull you into a deep sense of security and then one morning when you MUST have a cup of tea you go into the kitchen to find it dead on its perch. So far, however, so good. The one thing that is slightly annoying is that it has a plastic filter that sits just inside the spout. From time to time I have found this in the body of the kettle and then had to fish it out and fit it back on which is a little fiddly. I wouldn't mind so much, but I've never been able to work out whether the function of the filter is to keep things out of the kettle or to keep things in! ~ Care ~ The outside needs a wipe with a damp cloth as often as your house pride prompts you. Don't use chemical or abrasive cleaners on the outside as it spoils the brushed stainless steel finish. The inside can be de-scaled with liquid de-scaler or with a weak solution of white vinegar. Leave it to stand without boiling overnight and then pour away the solution. Fill with clean water, boil and empty afterwards. The filter can also be cleaned with a damp cloth or a mild cleaner. Don't overfill, as this could lead to spillage. You shouldn't under-fill, either, but the boil-dry protection should switch it off anyway. ~ Cost ~ I have the 1.7 litre version, which may or may not be available immediately, but Asda are currently offering a 1.5 litre kettle with a very similar design for £9.99. Sounds like a pretty good deal to me. Overall, despite the fiddly filter, I reckon this deserves five stars, because quite honestly I can't seriously fault it. Ok, so it doesn't whistle, but then perhaps that's not such a bad thing? Read the complete review |

Asda Smartprice Plastic Kettle
by roo88478 I bought this 1.7 Litre 220W Asda Value Kettle for my grandma very recently. (I bought it because the off switch on her kettle had stopped working, so if you put the kettle on to boil and left the room, the water would reach boiling point, but the kettle wouldn't turn off, so the kettle would boil itself dry, and steam anything in the ... surrounding area!) I bought this kettle for a very reasonable £5.49. The kettle is used on a daily basis by an elderly couple ( my grandparents) myself and for the occasional visitor. The kettle is a plain white plastic design, which comes with a flip lid, and comes on a separate stand. Is a simple, smart design, certainly no flashy chrome here, but it is quite a modern design and does match the other appliances in my grandma's kitchen. There is a panel on the side, with a gauge so you can see how much water is in the kettle. This is a plus as my grandma is quite environmentally conscious and only likes to boil as much as she needs, but also as other value kettles I have bought in the past haven't had a gauge on the side. Being plastic it is also easy to clean off any splashes / spillages from other kitchen activities. (Kettle is kept quite near the hob) The kettle is meant to hold around 7 cups of water, but I would say more like 6 (It would be 7 small cups) Fully filled it boils very quickly, in less than 2 minutes, and with just a couple of cups less than one. It is not the quietest of kettles but not overly loud either, definitely not the loudest I have heard, and because it boils quickly, I wouldn't say this is a problem, especially when you take the price into consideration. The packaging does slightly let the product down which is a cheap white cardboard box with the Asda value logos on, as the kettle looks more expensive once it's out of the box than the packaging would lead you to believe, but at the end of the day this is thrown away / kept in a cupboard anyway, and I would rather they kept this style of packaging / design of packaging and pass the savings onto the consumer, which they are doing! The kettle comes with a year's warranty with Asda, under their Asda price guarantee if you keep hold of your receipt (although I have found in the past that even without a receipt, Asda are usually happy to refund / exchange within reason) , which is an added bonus. I would recommend this kettle, it has more than surpassed the needs required for my grandparents for the price I paid. Especially recommended to those with an smaller household, or a smaller office for moderate daily use. Read the complete review |

Asda Smart Price Kettle
by chazababy My other half was making me a cup of tea (makes a change) when he realised that the kettle had boiled much quicker than he thought it would of. As he hardly ever makes a cuppa, I just thought that he was talking nonsense as usual. However, later that day I was feeling the cold so I filled the kettle and waited on it boiling. I hadn't ... noticed any unusual noises but true enough the kettles switch had flicked much quicker than usual. Never the less I filled the hot water bottle and while the water was still hot, it is clear by my observation, that the water wasn't boiling like it should be. Unfortunately for me I realised that my trusted Smart Price kettle (like the one in this picture) had given up hope and it's life had come to an end. As I carefully went to put it out for the rubbish men, I had noticed that part of the plastic on the unit had melted. I am very lucky that house hadn't been set on fire or that any one using it had been electrocuted. I'm not sure if the kettle had a built in safety cut out or not, but cant help but wonder if this is why the kettle stopped taking as long to boil. So off I went to find myself a new kettle. Years ago I used to like fancy kettles that light up different colours when you flicked the switch, but as you get older you tend to realise that as long as it does the job it doesn't really matter what it looks like. As my last kettle lasted for roughly 4 years, I decided to head back to ASDA for another Smart Price kettle. Asda Smart Price is a make that has been designed for smart shoppers. Asda have tried to reduce the cost as much as they possibly can to give their customers the best product for the best price. This means the product is always nutritionally comparable, see for yourself in store! When I picked up the box, I had noticed that the design had changed slightly compared to my last Smart Price Kettle. The design is much more basic but still pleasantly appealing. The kettle only comes in one colour, white, which seemed to me much more smaller than my last but when I checked how much water it held, it was exactly the same, holding 1.7 litres. I had also noticed that it is much lighter to hold when filled than most kettles and while the handle is non slip, there are no easy hold grips on the handle like the last Smart Price kettle. I like the fact that next to the water level indicator, like all kettles there are marks telling you how many litres your filling the kettle up to. But this one also tells you how many cups of tea you will get out of the kettle depending on where you fill the water. The water is put into the kettle with great ease by removing the plastic handle of the kettle. This slots back into place with great efficiency. And like any other kettle the switch lights up red when you press it down to let you know that it is working. This Smart Price kettle is easy to fill, pour and clean, it boils the water to the right temperature and maintains the hot temperature of the water for quite a while after boiling. I would recommend this Smart Price kettle for all ages of the public who wish to buy a white goods kettle. Not only is it easy to fill, use, clean and hold, it is also a bargain. The last kettle I paid about £3 but like everything this day and age and the economy being the way it is, I was pleasantly surprised that this fantastic kettle was only £4.95. Not only was the price good but it was also easy to set up. Simply take out kettle from the cardboard box, open the kettle, as inside you will find the base. Plug it in, fill the kettle with water and flick the switch and wait for it to boil. The only bad point that I need to make, is not actually about the kettle itself, its more to do with purchasing it. I was unable to buy this Smart Price kettle online with my shopping, I had to go into the store to buy it. I order my shopping online every week so was disappointed to see that the only kettles online that was available to me was ASDAs own, just under £12 and a few more expensive ones. I would give this kettle full marks of five our of five. I hope that this kettle has a much longer life that my old Smart Price kettle of 4 years but for under £5 I really cant complain. Thank you for taking the time to read my review. I hope that it was of some use to you in helping you decided if this kettle is for you. Now lets get the kettle on. Would you like a cup of tea?
