Breville VKJ318 Hot Cup
Advantages: Only 'boils' the amount of water that you need
Disadvantages: Cold tea, Cold Coffee, Cold chocolate.
When I saw this kettle I thought it was perfect for me, I hate having to wait for the kettle to boil, in fact I am a little bit obsessive over it, so when I saw this product only boiled the amount of water that you needed for each cup I figured that it would work at a quicker pace, which it indeed does!
I bought the product for just shy of £35 on the high street, it was excellentvalue as other places sell it for a higher price than that. I was also suprised by the size of the product as it doesn't take much more space than a normal kettle even with the drip tray attached it is rather petite.
The first cup of tea I made with this kettle wasn't exactly an excellent success. There is a dodgy little mechanism attached to the product that changed the amount of water that is boiled and dispensed, there are no markings on this so it is a pure game of guesswork, and I figured that as I was using a considerably larger mug it would be a good idea to turn the dial to three quarters of the way - what a mistake! I pressed the dispense button and within twenty short seconds I had a pool of warm water all over the table top (my mug had completely covered the size of the drip tray blocking it off).
Ok, so that part was my own fault for not experimenting more carefully, but the product could have made it clearer that it was generous with the amount of water it dispenses. But there is another problem, and the eagle eyed amongst you will have noticed that I mentioned the pool of water as being 'warm' that's because in it's haste this product doesn't actually boil anything - in fact I wouldn't even describe the water as being 'hot' which is completely useless for boiling the flavour out of tea leaves.
In the end I resorted to throwing this product under the stairs and using a normal kettle, I'd rather wait the boiling times than have a cold cuppa.
Summary: An excellent warm water dispenser... useless for hot drinks
