Advantages: Improves Water Quality, Great To Look At, Very Fast To Boil, Not Too Loud.

Disadvantages: The Continued Running Cost Of Replacing The Filters.

From Breville comes the "brushed stainless steel spectra illuminated filter kettle with Brita water technology", an impressive title for an equally as impressive home appliance.

Featuring a 360 degree rotating base, BRITA Maxtra cartridges, a memo display, one litre capacity, keep warm function, and easy grip handle. Not to forget the fact that the kettle is illuminated and passes through different colours depending on what it's doing. All of which results in an attractively designed appliance ideally suited for the modern kitchen.

The Brita Filter makes the kettle especially suited for those living in hard water areas, but also improves the appearance and taste of tap water in general, as well as reducing lime scale. The filters uses "carbon and ion exchange resin" to help remove chlorine, and heavy metals such as copper and lead from the water. What does this all mean? Simply we end up with purer, cleaner, and most important of all taster water all around. The filter holder is also easily removable for ease of cleaning and replacement.

It was clear from the first boil that the filter works and the kettle succeeds in what it's designed to do, I was able to produce one of the best cups of tea that I've ever had. It's pretty amazing when you realize how big a difference can exist between boiled tap water, and water that's been passed through the Brita filter first.

As kettles go this one is actually reasonably quiet in operation, an unlike some doesn't violently shake your work surface when bringing water to the boil. Thanks to the concealed three kilowatt element the kettle is very fast in operation, which promises to keep tea junkies happy. Despite some advanced technology the appliance remains easy and straightforward to use.

Build quality is excellent all around, and again looks good on the work surface. The power cord is a bit shorter than I would personally like, but it means you don't have an overly long cable running over a surface.

The fact that the kettle changes colour depending on what it's doing is a stylish and creditable attempt to living up what is generally considered to be a bland piece of kitchen hardware, but I would suggest that you switch it off at the plug when not in use to save energy.

An important fact to take into consideration is not only the initial cost of this application, but the continued cost of having to replace the Brita filters (which is recommended every month). This is most likely the biggest draw back to the kettle, but considering the sheer improvement in terms of water quality and therefore the quality of your hot drink (or whatever else) I personally feel that this is a very minor quibble considering.

If your looking for an stylish and functional kettle suitable for the twenty first century, one that will improve your water quality with minimum fuss then look no further as you've found it.
