A nice looking good kettle with a few little niggles

The filter in my last Breville kettle which we had had since it was given to us as a wedding present came apart, and with us moving house, I decided just to bite the dust and buy a new kettle, one that would look nice in our new kitchen in our new home. I didn't want to spend a fortune but I did want a kettle that was going to last, and I had no problems with my last Breville kettle, so I was happy to stay with that brand. After reading review after review, I opted for this Breville traditional style VKJ458 kettle. I liked the look of the kettle, and I prefer a stainless steel finish to a white kettle.

After pricing around I bought this kettle in Tesco having some vouchers to use, and it currently retails on the site for just over £25, which is about average for a decent kettle. I actually read several negative reviews citing the noise of the kettle as being a problem, but I wasn't worried about this even before I bought it. I actually quite like the fact that if I was in another room I can hear that the kettle has boiled so for me the noise isn't a bad thing.

When my kettle arrived, I was pleased with the round shape of the product. As can be seen from the picture above there is a black rounded covered handle. On the side of the kettle, there is a water gauge - this kettle holds 1.8L, and is marked up to 8 cups on the side, to give you an idea of how much water you need, and obviously to make you more energy efficient, only boiling what you need. The only problem I have with this water gauge is that it only starts at 4 cups, rather than the likes of 2, which my old kettle did, and then I tend to either over or underfill when I only want to boil it for a cup of tea for my husband and me.

Other features of this kettle include an illuminated switch which goes out when the kettle is boiled. It claims to be a rapid boil kettle, and I would say that it is fairly quick to bring water to the boil. I haven't timed it, but I have never felt that I have had to wait long. There is also quite a large spout which has a limescale mesh filter, and my kitchen tap with is very rounded fits in close to the spout meaning it is easy to fill through the spout and make use of the filter to keep the water and clean and clear as possible. I would say that the lid of the kettle is quite difficult to get off - now I haven't had a problem with this as I fill the kettle through the spout but for those that fill it through the main body, this may be more of a problem.

In relation to the noise level, yes it is quite a noisy kettle as it boils, and it may annoy some people, but to be honest, I haven't found it to disturb a conversation or tv program that I might be watching in the same vicinity as the kettle.

ALl in all, I have been very happy with this kettle, with the only niggles being in relation to the lid being hard to get off and secondly, the gauge not been marked as well as I would like. Other than that, I think it is a nice looking kettle.
