**Why I bought it**
This kettle was bought for us for our wedding 2 years ago and was purchased in black rather than in red. If you read some of my other reviews, you will know for making tea and coffee we use our Breville Hotcup regularly, so I was concerned that the kettle may be redundant. I do find myself using the kettle a lot for cooking or rinsing starch through rice, so the kettle is still very much needed in the kitchen.
I notice the best price on Amazon is £49. Our guests paid around £60 for it several years ago, and lets face it, a £5 kettle from Argos would have done the same job as this one. You are literally paying for the style and design of the kettle. In my opinion if you want your kettle to boil hot water, go for a cheaper version. If you want a pretty looking kettle, stick with this baby!
The item itself is made by DeLonghi, it surprised me just how hard it was to find a nice stylish black and silver kettle for the kitchen, a lot are old fashioned or look very 1980's and plasticy. I think that the stylish look of this kettle definitely set it apart from any of the other black kettles I had seen. In saying that, I completely regret buying anything chrome and even though there are only a few bits of chrome on this kettle, they drive me mad as the slightest drop of water, they need shining so that they sparkle. Perhaps if you aren't a perfectionist, this won't annoy you but it drives me scatty.
The item is made from quality materials. I was a little concerned that the handle would be flimsy as it is not fully attached to the kettle (see picture) in the way that a handle is fully attached to a mug/cup. At no point, even with a full kettle do I feel as though the handle will break under the weight of the water.
What can I say...it makes cold water hot in a few minutes! I feel it takes quite a while to boil, but perhaps I'm used to our Breville Hotcup which takes about 20-30 seconds to boil. If there had been a rapid boil option I would have gone for that as I am mostly quite impatient and think there are more important things in life than waiting for kettles to boil. That said, I think this is a pretty average boil time for a standard kettle. Nothing special about that. It has a 360 rotating base, I'm not sure why that is a feature to boast about? but if you need a kettle that rotates 360 degrees on its base, then this is the kettle for you. When you flick the switch, a light comes on to tell you it is boiling which is a nice touch, but again fairly standard for a kettle in the 21st century.
It's an expensive kettle for very few, sexy features. However, the kettle itself is pretty sweet to look at and definitely one of the nicest electric kettles I have seen in black. For that reason alone, I was in, I purchased it (well our wedding guest kindly did).
You can get far cheaper kettles with the same features, so for that reason it only gets a 4 star. It does everything it says on the tin though.

Summary: Could get a cheaper, uglier kettle for half the price.
