Dualit 72022
Jug Kettle

Why buy a kettle? To heat water obviously. Every house has one and it isn't even a decision; when one breaks, you go and buy another one. Well, our one broke so the next time we were out we looked at what was available and decided on this model.

The choice of kettles now is pretty big. From space age, ultra-modern to nifty retro chic. You can get kettles in all shapes and sizes, in traditional white to funky pastels. Whatever you want is out there somewhere.

Our only real criteria was that we wanted a stainless steel, jug kettle. We didn't want anything too funky and this one has a simplicity about it that is both comtemporary and unpretentious. £50 from John Lewis and we took it home.

In use:
Dualit have an enviable reputation for quality and longevity based on their ubiquitous presence in catering establishments up and down the country and this encourages people to spend more on their products. The current fashion for 'industrial' style appliances (think stainless steel ranges) means that Dualit is very well placed compared to other domestic manufacturers.

At 1.5l it is standard domestic size and big enough 90% of the time. The lid comes away completely and reveals a large opening that makes filling simple. The water level indicator is large and clearly read and the power switch at the bottom of the handle easy to use. With the handle on the opposite side to the spout there is no risk of scalding.

I haven't taken a stopwatch to it yet but boiling times are acceptable without being particularly quick. It is, however, relatively quiet and I haven't noticed any splashing even when full.

This is our second model. The first started leaking through the base but John Lewis exchanged for a new one without quibble. Since then we have had no problems whatsoever. Like all stainless steel appliances, this requires regular cleaning and living in a hard water area it needs to be descaled every once in while. This is easily done as there is good access to the inside but care must be taken as it can easily be scratched if cleaned too vigorously. I haven't had it long enough to comment on its durability but being a Dualit I expect a few good years yet.

This kettle is more reasonably priced than other Dualit products (£170 for a toaster!) and I don't think you'll go far wrong.

Summary: Good looking kettle from a quality brand

£170 for a toaster!?!? Seems a little expensive to heat bread...
