Advantages: boils water

Disadvantages: everything else

My kettle broke so I needed a new one but I didn't want to pay a lot of money for it so I bought this swan traditional kettle.
It is made from stainless steel so matched the rest of my accessories and was only £22 from very.co.uk.

When it arrived I was a little disappointed with the size and look of the kettle. It is supposed to look like the old hob whistling kettles and it does but it looked a lot smaller than my previous kettle.
It is rounded in shape and the base, lid and spout are made from stainless steel with a black plastic base, handle and nib on the lid for easy lifting to fill it. It has a clear water window in the middle to see how much water you are filling it with and a little switch for putting it on to boil that lights up when boiling.
The round shape of the kettle just doesn't seem right and looks out of proportion somehow but I figured it was just a kettle and it would do.

The lid is fitted very tightly so needs a good yank to free it so I usually just filled it from the spout which is easy as it is quite wide and the tap fits into it fine. The first time I used it I washed it out and then boiled the kettle and poured it away before filling it with water for tea.
It brings water to the boil really quick but it seems to keep it on the boil for absolutely ages before turning itself off and it is easily the noisiest kettle I have ever owned.

The stainless steel gets extremely hot and it would be quite easy to burn yourself if you were not careful especially due to its shape and the position of the handle I sometimes found the side of my hand could graze the kettle whilst I was pouring the water which really hurt and nearly made me drop the kettle in shock a few times.
The kettle also got absolutely filthy on the outside within a few weeks and needed constant cleaning but no matter how much I tried rubbing it I could never get it properly clean.

It has a capacity of 1.7 litres which is not bad and especially considering it looks like it wouldn't even hold that much water.
There was also a funny metallic taste to the water which didn't go away no matter how much I used it. This was absolutely disgusting and other people commented on it when I made them a cup of tea or coffee. By this point I knew the kettle wasn't for me and I was going to get a new one when one day it just died a few weeks after buying it. Normally I would have been annoyed as it wasn't that old but I was a bit relieved as it meant I had no choice but to go out and buy another one.
