Cuppa tea anyone???

Advantages: Cheap, reliable, looks nice
Disadvantages: A bit noisy but not overly so, fishing the filter out of the water
Being an avid drinker of tea and coffee... I am now going to review the most used applicance in my kitchen. About a year ago, in what is a strange turn of events for me, I decided not to go for the cheapest kettle that Tesco had. Normally I make a bee-line straight for the value version of whatever I buy. I previously brought a Tesco Value white jug kettle, but it lasted for about a year, and that's it. Although it quite possibly conked out from over use... I thought I would go for the next category up from value, but still a fairly cheap kettle.
I purchased the tesco brand of kettle for just under £10. This seemed a reasonable price to me and the kettle looked a nice design.
On taking it out of the box, I immediately thought it looked a lot more stylish and nice than the previously Value kettle I brought. It has a black base unit, to which the mains power cord is attached. The jug of the kettle is a nice shiny silver colour, with a black handle and black lid. The handle has a black on/off switch; and the black band on the bottom of the kettle just before the base unit has a light up device which illuminates while the kettle is boiling. Opening the lid, inside just before the spout is a small filter, which stops any flaky limescale going in your tea. It is a removable filter, which means that it can be taken off to clean it, but ocassionally, I have opened the kettle to find it floating around inside the water. When this happens, you have to stick your hand in the kettle to fish it out, and clip it back on to by the spout!
The jug of the kettle does not have a measuring scale on the outside of the kettle which you would be able to see how much water you are boiling (I am generally careful with my pennies, including over filling the kettle!); however inside the kettle is a small metal pole, with a maximum and minimum marker on it, which shows how much you can safely fill the kettle.
When you turn it on, the light illuminates and off it goes. It is quite a loud kettle, but I'm not too fussed about that, as it's not too bad, but given that I have an open plan living area, I do have to pause a dvd on the laptop as I won't be able to hear the dvd over the kettle!!
It takes roughly 3 minutes to boil a full kettle, which is not rapid boil, but for the cost of the kettle, I wouldn't have expected it! My kettle needs are fairly basic, and I didn't go out looking to buy a kettle with a rapid boil function!
When it has boiled, the swich automatically flicks off, which prevents over boiling. Also, if you have not filled the kettle enough, it automatically cuts out in order to prevent damage to the kettle. I have done this once, and after it cuts out, it resets after a few minutes and you hear a 'click' noise when you can use it again.
The outside of the kettle obviously gets hot while it's boiling, but cools rapidly and is touchable after a few minutes.
The chrome finish of this kettle means that you can see any splashes of grease etc from cooking and it gets slightly dirty from the condensing steam etc but with a regular wipe over the outside, it's easy to keep clean. The removable filter can come out to be cleaned, and the base only needs a wipe over with a damp cloth while it's turned off and unplugged. Although mine didn't stay as shiny as I would have liked it to, it's definitely as low maintenance kettle in terms of cleaning.
I would recommend this kettle to anyone. It looks a lot nicer than the Value kettle, although I hope you aren't easily irritated, as having to clip the filter back to the spout may irritate you!
... I am slightly confused by the picture and sound quality ratings for a kettle... but dooyoo won't let me post the review without choosing a rating.... I'm guessing it's a generic ratings category for electricals!!
