Tesco JK07 Jug
Advantages: Cheap, safe to use
Disadvantages: Needs regular cleaning
It's one of the most important gadgets in the house and we always take them for granted. I tend to spend as little as possible on kettles - I remember owning a suicidal model in my student days that lost the ability to click off and had to be manually switched off before it boiled itself to a crisp.
No such problems with this Tesco model I'm glad to say. The jug is a simple sloping design with ample capacity for 2 litres of water. I doubt this would be enough for 8 cups of tea that the water gauge promises but the jug's certainly big enough for most households. The plastic that the kettle is made from is ideal in terms of durability and offers enough heat protection that pretty much any part of the kettle can be handled without fear of burning oneself. It's also very cheap- my local Tesco is frequented by students and in late September they were on offer for £5.
Any weaknesses? It's not the fastest and takes several minutes to boil when at full capacity. Maybe it's just because of the quality of Manchester water, but the element builds up with limescale very quickly and needs regular cleaning to prevent the taste of the water from deteriorating.
Overall, a good value kettle, perfect for those on a budget.
Summary: A good basic kettle
