Apple Wireless Keyboard
Advantages: Wonderful looks and typing experience.
Disadvantages: Quite a pricey keyboard.
I have used this keyboard for about six months now and i think its time to give an in detail review of it. I will review it in different categories to get the most in depth accurate review as possible.
When i first opened this product I was very impressed with the looks. I was sceptical about how the white keys and aluminium body would look but they actually go together very well. It looks better in person than it does in pictures online so definitely go to an apple store if you are unsure about the looks. The keyboard is quite small as there is no numpad but the keys are full sized. This products looks excellent combined with a magic mouse and an iMac and makes for a professional looking setup when you use it with a mac.
The keyboard is wireless which immediately looks good as there are no untidy cables running our from it. This keyboard is extremely tin but at the same time maintains a large amount of durability and is rigid in construction. The design is excellent as you can move it around easily and is small and light enough that you can pop it in a bag and use it with a macbook or iPad. The keys are plastic but are good quality and i have not had any problems with them in terms of breakages and faults. The batteries are stored conveniently in the top and it is easy to change the batteries although you will not have to do that much at all. However there are a few ways in which the design could be improved. The arrow keys located in the bottom right hand corner of the keyboard are very small and are quite fiddly especially if you have large fingers. Also i think that the addition of a numpad would have been a nice touch as you only get a row of numbers above the main keys. Another thing to take into account concerning the design is the colour of the keys. They are white plastic and over time they do pick up dirt and get some grunge build up on them. For me i have just carefully wiped the keyboard with a damp cloth and that clears off any dirt if it is a problem.
This small keyboard has quite a lot of features but some are lacking which I will get to in a second. Firstly along the top of the keyboard there is a row of buttons which have some very useful functions. Going from left to right we have the brightness up and down, mission control button, launch pad, media controls and volume controls. These buttons are easy to access and are very useful when you are watching a film or listening to music. However i think that they could have added some more features for example hotkeys that oped applications with a press of a button and more advanced volume controls but the ones provided are sufficient for everyday usage. Another selling point is that this is wireless and connects via bluetooth. Even though this keyboard is wireless apple has pulled out all the stops in terms of battery life. The 2 AA batteries that are provided last for a very long time and I have only had to change the batteries once in the six months I have had this product. Also AA batteries are cheaper than most small batteries and are available in most shops. This is because of the intelligent power management system that powers the keyboard on only when you start using it so it isn't sitting dormant using up battery. When you press the caps lock key a green light shows up which is useful but when you are typing this is covered by your hand and a light placed nearer the top would be better.
Ease of use/ Typing Experience
This is the best keyboard i have used so far for ease of typing and general typing experience. The keyboard does not make very much noise when it is in use and the keys are very responsive. The keys are arranged in a chiclet formation which means that the keys are separate form one another (not touching each other). This makes it easy to identify the keys and typing is much easier and i have to say that my typing speed and accuracy has improved when i have used this product. This along with the magic mouse makes for an excellent experience and it interacts very well with mac os to enhance speed and efficiency. I would prefer this product had backlit keys and if it did that would definitely justify the price of this keyboard. Saying this i have had few problems with typing in the dark.
I'm not sure how much the average keyboard price is but this keyboard can be purchased for £57 straight from apple although I'm sure other websites will sell it cheaper than this. Even so the price your paying will be around £50 which is a large amount for a keyboard to I would recommend testing this in the apple store or at a friends house before you buy it although hopefully this review will have helped you make a decision. Luckily I did not have to pay for mine as you get one free with iMac. I have looked online and for this price you can get a decent wireless keyboard for example one made made by logitech and you would get a larger range of functions and a numpad. However considering aesthetics I am yet to see a keyboard which looks nicer than this for the money. If you do want a numpad with your keyboard you can opt for the wired apple keyboard which is the same but has a full size numpad and directional keys.
I would definitely recommend this to anyone with a mac as it really works well with the operating system to enhance and improve your experience in general when using osx. Make sure that your computer has bluetooth functionality before buying this. This speeds up your typing with its design and is portable enough to bring with you so i would say this is must have for apple users.
Summary: Best keyboard I have used, but at a price.
