Logitech G11 Gaming Keyboard
Advantages: Great for gamers. Plenty of functionality. Easy to setup and use.
Disadvantages: Not recommended for the average user. Backlighting could be brighter.
The Logitech G11 Gaming Keyboard is a well designed, comfortable to use keyboard with a blue backlighting, media control functions, built in USB ports (not USB 2.0) and 18 "G" keys that can be bound to perform various functions, plus the ability to switch between three profiles, allowing for up to 54 combinations! Those who constantly accidentally hit the Windows button will also be pleased to know that you can toggle the functionality of the Windows key on and off with this keyboard.
From the outset we should make it clear that this keyboard is not designed for your average user. This is a keyboard designed for gamers, such as those who play World of Warcraft with a number of different macros and want a simple option for executing commands, rather than a complicated keystroke combination such as ALT+SHIFT+F6. Using this keyboard, such commands can be bound to a key, such as G1, and using the supplied software combinations can be easily set up so that whenever you hit a specific "G" key, in-game or out, you will perform the combination. This is especially useful for those who want to use the same key combination setups across multiple games. For example, if you play World of Warcraft, and have G1 cast to a specific spellcast sequence, but then also play LOTRO and have a similar setup there, the G1 key will have the same functionality in both games without the need to further configure the keyboard to perform these functions.
The supplied software that allows you to use all of this keyboard's features is intuitive and easy to use, although there may be a small learning curve for those not used to such equipment.
The blue backlighting has two levels of brightness and can be turned off entirely if it isn't to your taste. It is useful for playing in the dark but it should be said that even on the highest brightness level it isn't particularly bright but will allow you to see your way around the keyboard in low light.
The keys are responsive, as one would expect from a gaming keyboard, and can easily be removed to clean under the keys without damaging either the keys or the keyboard itself. The G11 is also a sturdy construction for the most part, although the edges do feel like they have a little too much give in them.
The keyboard features a volume control, play/pause, stop and back/forward buttons for multimedia and the volume control will work in games and in Windows at any time. These are compatible with most of the popular media players such as WinAmp, Windows Media Player, DivX Player and iTunes but are not necessarily compatible with all players. Updates may be available through the Logitech site if you cannot get your favourite player to work with the multimedia keys.
On the downside this is a large keyboard due to the addition of the 18 "G" keys as well as the multimedia controls at the top and those struggling for desk space may wish to consider one of the smaller offerings from Logitech. It is also worth pointing out that this keyboard is on the lower end scale of Logitech gaming keyboards, with the higher level ones featuring greater functionality and LCD screens, although not quite as many "G" keys. The dimensions of the keyboard are roughly 21.5 inches across by 8.5 inches. For comparisons sake, the average keyboard is about 16.5 inches across by 6.75 inches.
The keyboard connects via USB and is wired so ensure you have adequate desk space and a spare USB port to set it up. Plastic feet are on the underside to raise the keyboard if that is your preference but these are likely to slip on a shiny surface.
Summary: If you're looking for a reasonably priced option for your gaming escapades this should fit the bill.
