Microsoft Wired Desktop 600
Advantages: Durable, Easy to Set Up
Microsoft clearly has a huge reputation when it comes to all things computer related having dominate the Operating System market with their Windows offering. As large an Organisation they maybe, I had never used any of their peripherals until 14 months ago and I was given this keyboard and mouse at work.
Both the keyboard and mouse are designed to a good enough standard. The keyboard has two little feet on the left and right back corners so you can elevate the keyboard slightly. I don't like typing on a keyboard that is flat to the desk. I find it uncomfortable and find that it's harder to touch type.
The keyboard is a standard QWERTY keyboard, which most people will be familiar with using. There is also a separate numeric keypad, which I find is useful when working with spreadsheets or when performing data entry where there is a large volume of numbers which need to be keyed. In my opinion the keys are well spaced out and the keyboard doesn't feel cramped or over crowded.
The keyboard also have the Function keys, such as F1, which is fairly standard on a keyboard these days. There is also a handful of quick keys. The quick keys can be used to Play/Pause, control the volume up or down or mute the sound altogether. There is also a button which bring up the calculator, situated near the numeric keypad.
As for the mouse, it is designed to be used by both left and right handed individuals. There are 3 buttons on the mouse, there is a left and right click button and there is the scroll wheel. The scroll wheel can also be used as a 3rd clickable button.
I find that the mouse fits well in my hand and it's very light weight. The mouse curves in slightly and I find that my thumb fits nicely in the gentle curve which provides me with a good, comfortable grip on the mouse.
~Installation and Use~
The mouse and keyboard couldn't be easier to install. Both are plug and play devices and as soon as you plug them into their own individual USB ports, they are ready to use in a matter of seconds.
I have found both the mouse and keyboard to be responsive and very durable. The keys on the keyboard haven't got sticky, there is no ware on the keys and after 14 months of use, both mouse and keyboard look almost brand new.
Both the mouse and keyboard are wired USB devices and require a USB slot each. The mouse is an Optical Mouse, which means that the movements are tracked by an Optical Light instead of the traditional roller ball. I would recommend using any Optical mouse with a mouse mat. I find that a shiny office table can often interfere with the Optical light and cause your on screen pointer to behave oddly.
I was expecting a well made product, which was easy to install and worked well with their Operating System and I have to say, I haven't been disappointed. This product seems to be durable and it's easy to install and use. You can buy this for around £15 online and it's worth every penny in my opinion. I'm sure Microsoft will be delighted to learn that they have come through my review with their reputation intact.
Summary: It's not flashy, but functional and hard waring.
