Milupa Aptamil
by Ninski1 When my son was born we had problems breastfeeding as he was premature and jaundiced, so he spent the first few weeks of his life in hospital recovering. We were given the choice of feeding him formula milk to build up his strength and we chose Aptamil, which the hospital provided in small 100ml glass bottles with a new teat for each ... use. When we bought him home we switched to the powdered variety, which comes in a 900g tub made of cardboard with a plastic lid and a handy plastic yellow measuring spoon. The tub contains instructions on how to make up the formula, but basically after you have sterilized your bottles, you add the required amount of powder to the bottle that already contains the correct amount of boiled water and then you shake it altogether and allow to cool, ready for baby to have. Made up feeds need to be used within 2 hours of preparation. When I was using the formula, in 2010/11, it cost around £10 per tub. When I was out and about I also used the handy 200ml ready made up cartons, which I would pour into sterilised bottles. These were good, but difficult to open, so I would carry a small pair of scissors with me. At first these cartons were a bit wasteful, as my son was only drinking about 50ml per sitting, but they can be kept in the fridge and as he grew he would be able to drink most of the milk in one sitting. Aptamil can be used from birth and is designed to be nutritionally tailored with a unique blend of GOS/FOS. It also contains nucleotides and long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPs). The Aptamil website says that "Galacto- (GOS) and fructo- (FOS) oligosaccharides are special carbohydrates that pass undigested beyond the tummy into the lower gut where they encourage your baby's friendly bacteria to thrive. These occur naturally in breastmilk and a variety of fruits, grains and vegetables, including bananas, artichokes, chicory and onions. LCPs are special beneficial fatty acids, from the omega-3 and omega-6 groups, which are essential for the development of your baby's brain and eyes. World experts have concluded that the current evidence strongly supports the inclusion of LCPs in infant formula" Overall I would recommend Aptamil to others, the formula is easy to use and my son had no problems with it. by kama0529 When my son was born, I decided to feed my son Aptamil First Milk - mainly because it was the first tub my partner bought when he went shopping - and to be honest I didn't really think there was anything much different between the term infant formula milks that were on offer. Aptamil was obviously a name I had heard of and so this gave ... me some confidence that it would be suitable for my child. A 900g tin of Aptamil First Milk powder currently costs £9.49 from Boots - which is a similar price to other branded infant formula milks. I am a little confused as to why I was unable to use my Boots Advantage points to buy this product - but for some reason this was the case. The Aptamil First Milk is, as the name would suggest, suitable for infants from birth. The powder comes in a tin which has a plastic resealable lid, and when it is first opened it has a metal foil seal over the top which is pulled off prior to initial use. The powder, once opened, has a shelf life of three months, but in reality a tin would last me about a week. There is comprehensive product and user information printed on the tin, and the instructions and directions are very easy to follow. Making up the milk is simple and involves adding one level scoop (enclosed in the powder) to 30mls of pre-boiled water. I tended to use the edge of the tin to scrape any excess powder off of the scoop to ensure the scoop was level. It is then simply a matter of shaking up the powder and water. The powder dissolves quickly and easily and there are no lumps left after a few vigourous shakes. The milk itself contains all of the things that you would expect a formula milk to contain (Prebiotics, antioxidants, LCP's etc) and it purports to be as close to breast milk as possible. Obviously I have no way of verifying this. However, I did find that this milk tended to make my son vomit with every feed - to the point where we began to nickname the milk "craptomil". After speaking to my health visitor she suggested I try another formula milk - and so I swapped to Cow and Gate - and then the vomiting stopped. Clearly there was something about this milk that didn't agree with my son......although I do know many people who have used this milk without any problems. Read the complete review |

Milupa Aptamil
by Bunnyhop2 When my babies were born I was unable to breastfeed them properly so they were given formula top ups. As we were in hospital the type of formula used was what they provided, in our case Aptamil first milk which is suitable from birth. One day the support worker changed the brand that the twins were being given and they were both sick ... after the 2 feeds they had it. We made sure from that point that they were only given Aptamil for top ups and carried on using it when I stopped breast feeding at 9 months. Aptamil offer a wide range of formulas First Milk (From birth) Anti Reflux (From birth to 1) Hungry Milk (helps delay early weaning) Follow on (From 6 months) Growing up 1 year + Growing up 2 years + They also do a range of porridge suitable from 4 months+ & 7 months+ Packaging Aptamil formulas are available in tubs of powder or ready made in cartons/bottles. The tubs of powder have a plastic lid which flips open, inside is a foil seal so you know that the product is fresh and hasn't been tampered with. I always found these easy to open as there are arrows to indicate the direction to pull the tab. The cartons that the first milk comes in require scissors to open so you need to make sure you have some with you if you are using these out and about. The bottles which the ready made Growing Up milk comes in are far easier to open and Aptamil do seem to be starting to offer all their ready made milks in these bottles. The packaging provides a full list of ingredients Powder formula The cheapest way to buy Aptamil formula is the tubs of powder. This needs to be made using water that has been boiled and left to stand for 30 minutes. The back of the tubs give a detailed table of how many scoops of powder you need and the volume of water to make your required amount of formula. A plastic scoop is included in the tub and there is a piece of plastic across the corner of the opening that you can use to remove excess powder as you need to use level scoops. I always made the formula straight into the bottles and would then use a jug of cold water if it was still slightly too hot for how the twins liked it. Powder formula is best made fresh and used within the timescales on the packaging. Ready made formula When the twins were newborn they were only having tiny amounts of top up once a day so the ready made cartons were ideal for us. We used to store the open cartons in the fridge so we could use them again within the use by time. We used to just warm the bottles in hot water until they were the required temperature. Although we switched to cows milk when the twins reached 1 I have used the Growing up 1+ formula when we have been out. The bottles are really handy when you haven't got access to a fridge to keep cows milk in. As the bottles are kept at room temperature you can just pour them into little one's beaker or bottle for them to drink. Although formula has extra vitamins added it is much cheaper to use cows milk after a year. I do also give mine a separate vitamin supplement on the advise of our Health Visitor. Porridge When we introduced breakfast at 5 1/2 months I decided to try Aptamil's creamy porridge which is made with rice and corn cereal. This is easy to make with formula and makes a great weaning food. We then moved onto the multigrain breakfast from 7 months which was also popular with my little ones. Prices and availability Aptamil products are widely available from supermarkets and places like Boots which sell baby foods. A selection of prices at Boots as at July 2012 are First Milk 200ml carton 69p First Milk 900g powder £9.49 (As shops are not allowed to run promotions on first milks prices tend to be the same wherever you shop) Growing Up 1+ 900g Milk Powder £8.49 Creamy Porridge Stage 1 125g £2.49 Although slightly more expensive than comparable brands my little ones have always liked the Aptamil products they've had and after the initial sickness after a different brand I am more than happy to pay the extra. Would I recommend? Yes, Aptamil make good quality formulas and cereals suitable with a range for each stage of your babies growth. Although I never used the 6 month follow on milk as my babies were happy on the first milk and this provided everything they needed until they switched to cow's milk. More information Aptamil's website is currently unavailable but when it's back up and running it can be found at aptaclub.co.uk They also have a free phone number 0800 996 1000 where you can speak to one of their experts. I've always found their website really helpful with any questions I've had. I also joined their parenting club which sent free samples and a cute toy polar bear. Read the complete review |
