Advantages: Good quality bottles
Disadvantages: They didnt help with my babys colic
When Jayden was in hospital they supplied the milk we decided to feed him on and also the bottles and teats, however the day before he came home they suggested we bought in his own bottle that he would be using at home to see how he got on with it and to give him a bit of practise using it as it was different to the teats they gave him in hospital. We decided to give him Phillips Avent Classic bottles, I had heard good things about this brand ad after receiving a free Avent bottle I decided to stick to this brand and purchased several more so we had enough, I managed to get 2 free Avent bottles so purchased a box of 3 of the same bottles.
Packaging
The 3 Avent Classic bottles I purchased came in a large white cardboard box, the Avent logo is written at the top of the box with a picture of 3 Avent bottles down one side, the other side of the front of the box contains various different bits of information about the bottles. The back and sides of the box also contain more product information, the box is mainly covered with writing other than a couple of pictures of the bottles, however all of the information is clearly set out and easy to ready, all of the information is written in blue writing with some words written in bold. The packaging itself is quite plain and basic however it does contain all of the information that you need to know about the products.
The Bottles
The Avent bottles look like a traditional baby's bottle, the main container part of the bottle is made from a clear plastic and it has the Avent logo across the middle and the name Phillips at the bottom in blue. There are a further 3 parts to the bottle the Philips Avent teat which allows your baby to easily latch on, the adapter ring which sits just inside the neck of the bottle, this combined with the teat allows air to flow into the bottle and not your baby's tummy this is designed to help with better digestion and prevent colic, and then there is the larger plastic ring which the teat sits inside, this simply screws onto the top of the bottle to stop the milk leaking out. As I have said the Avent bottles have an anti colic action with an easy latch on teat, the teat also has a unique skirt which flexes and allows a natural feeding rhythm, this means that the milk will only flow at the pace chosen by your baby making feeding more comfortable. The Classic Avent bottles are also designed to make them easy to clean and fill, the bottle has a wide neck which means it is easy to get inside and clean, the shape of the bottle is slightly curved which makes them easy to hold and grip. These bottle have the measurements written on the side of them in bright blue making them easy to read as you fill the bottle, the bottles come in various sizes, we have two of these, one of the bottles holds 125ml of milk and the other holds 260ml milk so they are suitable for most babies in that respect. The Avent bottles we have are 1m+ which means they have a slow flow of milk with two small holes in the teat, however these bottles do come with different teats including
* 0m+ - 1 hold and are suitable for newborns
* 1m+ - 2 holes and have a slow flow
* 3m+ - 3 holes and have a medium flow
* 6m+ - 4 holes and have a fast flow
* 3m+ thicker liquids - these have 1 slot rather than holes and have a variable flow
The different style teats means that there is something suitable for babies of all ages and abilities, the different types of teats available are listed on the side of the box for you to refer to.
Price & Availability
As I have mentioned I purchased a pack of 3 of the Avent bottles and this cost me £9.00, although I did get these a little bit cheaper as I had a money off voucher for them. Personally I feel that these were good value for money as the bottle are of an excellent quality. I purchased the pack of bottles from my local Tesco, however they are also available from a variety of places such as other supermarkets, shops such as Boots and Superdrug as well as online so they are widely available.
My Opinion
Generally I was pleased with the Avent Classic bottles, they were well made and appeared to be hardwearing, I also liked the fact that they are reasonably priced. Although I was pleased with the quality of the Avent bottles unfortunately I have had to stop using them and purchase a different variety of bottle (will review later) When Jayden takes his bottle he gulps it down so fast that he gulps down air at the same time which for a windy baby who doesn't wind very well anyway is not good. We gave him a few days with the Avent bottles and after speaking to the midwife who also saw him drink from the bottles we were advised to try a different brand specifically designed to help reduce the amount of air swallowed. Although the Avent bottles do have the anti colic adapter ring to prevent air going into your baby's tummy Jayden was still having problems.
Overall I would say that I recommend the Avent Classic bottles as generally there is nothing wrong with them, they are a good quality bottle which is designed to make feeding a comfortable experience, however it was just unfortunate that Jayden didn't get on with them. I would recommend the bottles to anyone with a baby as the are definitely worth a try it just depends on whether your baby gets on with them or not.
Summary: A good bottle but not for us.
