- Why I Bought -
I had always planned to breast feed my son but as I wanted the option to express milk I did also stock up on bottles, milk storage pots, steriliser and bottle brushes. In fact I was so well prepared that from looking at the huge selection of feeding equipment we had you could easily have thought we were intending to bottle feed formula. I was keen to purchase most of the feeding equipment from the Philips Avent brand as I knew it was popular and widely available. We had had success with the 125ml Avent bottles so it was a natural choice go move onto the 260ml bottles as my son grew. I picked up a three pack of these in TKMaxx. This was ideal as we had three of the 125ml bottles and found this was a good number.
- The Bottles -
Each bottle is made from clear plastic (BPA free) and displays the Avent logo and a measuring chart in mls and fluid ounces. Each bottle can hold 260ml/just over 9 fl oz. This is all very clearly marked in bright blue so that it is easy to see how much is in the bottle. There is a white plastic ring top which screws easily onto the bottle and doesn't come loose. Through this the teat can be attached. The triple pack bottles each come with a silicone slow flow teat (stage 2). These are extra soft and have two holes so that a baby age one month or older gets just the right amount of milk at the right speed. At the neck of the bottle there is an anti-colic ring this works with the silicone teat to reduce colic. Finally there is a clear plastic lid which slots onto the bottle top to stop any liquid leaking out. The bottles are quite simple in design but they look nice and practical at the same time.
- Milk O'clock -
As with the 125ml bottles these can fit directly onto my spectra breast pump, as well as any of the Avent pumps. This is very handy and makes expressing as hassle free as possible. As we had already used the 125ml bottles there was no problem with getting my son to take to these. He seemed to be getting the perfect amount of milk through the slow flow teat. There is also the option to buy further stages of teats separately. My husband really enjoyed being able to feed our baby, it was a bonding experience for him and also meant I could go out without baby! We mostly used the bottles for expressed milk when I was having a night out away from the baby. When my son was around six months old he was able to hold the bottle himself while drinking. We never experienced any colic, just a small amount of wind. We used these with breast milk until my son was six months old when he started to have formula if I wasn't there to breast feed him. The bottles worked well with both breast milk and formula. When my son was 12 months old he moved onto a beaker. Overall I found the bottles easy to assemble and use. My son took to them easily and we never experienced any negative effects from using them. Also they never leaked which is a big positive.
- Storing Milk -
It is very simple to convert these bottles into milk storage pots simply by removing the teat and adding a sealing disc, sold separately. These can then be stored in the freezer until the milk is needed.
- Cleaning -
These bottles are dishwasher and microwave steriliser safe. It is important to completely take the bottle apart before cleaning it to ensure that all milk residue is thoroughly removed. This is very easy to do and I usually washed them by hand with a bottle brush. I sterilised them before use and they fit perfectly in our Avent steriliser. Our bottles still looked good after about nine months of use, however this was occasional use compared to someone who is bottle feeding formula several times a day.
- Price and Availability -
This pack of three 260ml bottles costs £13.50 in Boots or £9.25 on Amazon. I think I paid just under £10.00 in TKMaxx. I think these prices are reasonable, not the cheapest available but then you are paying for quality and a trusted brand.
- Would I Recommend? -
I would definitely recommend these bottles as we found them to be easy to use and clean, long lasting, high quality and most importantly my son took to them straight away. I would certainly buy these again in the future.
Summary: 260ml Avent bottles that I just can't fault
